So, back to my story about the Kimberley owls

Have you ever wanted to run away from yourself?

Twenty years ago or so, when I arrived at this remote cattle station at the top end of western Australia – a million acres of vast wilderness that I was to call home – I was already deeply unhappy. I’d been troubled by a mystery illness which had disrupted my career, and whose lingering affects of fatigue left me strangely unable to pursue a ‘normal life’.  I found that after working all day I had no energy for socialising or relationships, I could no longer drink alcohol without feeling ill, and the plans I had made for myself seemed to be going up in smoke. Instead of climbing the ladder I was stuck in the middle of nowhere, and that, it seems, was where my life was going.

After such a promising beginning, my life had spiralled into a place I couldn’t recognise. My relationship was in tatters, although I was still trying to make it work. The staff at the station were mostly men with poor social skills – only the gay and seriously alcoholic station cook took any time to talk to me. And I had come ill-prepared for living somewhere so remote.  I had brought only one book, and no crafts or projects for a nightly distraction.

Even worse, I had this weird psychic sense of something impending. I had moments of deja vu, lucid dreams, a feeling of being watched, and I often smelled flowers or smoke when there was nothing to create that sort of odour. I knew things about people or events without being able to understand why.

I worked hard on shoving any intuitive or psychic feelings and perceptions back down.  That was something I actively didn’t want.  Being unwell already made me different enough.  I just wanted to be normal.

That was quite hard to do, given my circumstances.

The aboriginal man who’d met us at the last river crossing on the day we’d arrived at the Station still treated me as if I was invisible.  It was becoming embarrassing.  Ever since he’d poked his bony finger into my breastbone, with his strange welcoming message, ‘You dat thing’, he had only spoken to me twice; both times in the evening as we came back to our rooms after a night around the camp fire.  Each time he simply asked me, “You see dem owls?” And then he’d ask, “How many fella you see?” There had only been one, and just like the first night he had grunted at me and walked off.

I felt like a fringe dweller in an already tiny community with limited social activities and opportunities for friendships.

The Station had satellite television – a big screen in the staff dining room – and we received two channels clearly.  One was the ABC, and the other was an amalgamation of sport, more sport, local sport, national and international sport, fishing shows and a few bad reruns. To change channels someone needed to go out to the big box under the satellite dish and flick a switch. No-one ever wanted to watch the ABC besides me, and seeing I was not a drinker either, it didn’t leave me many options for evening entertainment.  It was miserably lonely.

I ended up with two favourite activities.

I’d sit quietly around the nightly campfire, listening to the music as stockmen strummed their guitars and sang, or played their small (very small!) collection of country music CDs.  While everyone else drank beer I’d sip tea and watch for owls. Gradually, over the coming months, I began to see more than one owl coming down to the trees around our fire. But the aboriginal stockman never asked me again how many owls I saw, and I was too shy to say anything to him. I figured he didn’t like me anyway.

My most favourite thing of all was something I did with only my dog Bundy for company, once the station’s communal dinner was finished. On moonlit nights, Bundy and I would head out onto the main road, which was just a wide dirt track leading out to the runway or over to the river crossing and back into town. We’d choose a direction and start walking. The dust was soft and thick beneath our feet and we would walk until the laughter, loud television and bad country music faded into nothingness. We never needed a torch. The stars and moon were so bright that we could see perfectly well without them.

When we came to a good straight stretch, I’d lie down in the soft dust in the middle of the road, and Bundy would come and lay beside me, her head on my chest. Together we’d look up and count shooting stars. There were so many that I needed to choose a high number as our goal each night. Seventy-six I’d say to Bundy.  When we’ve seen seventy-six shooting stars we’ll head back home to bed.

Shooting stars - image from www.freeimages.gatag.net

Shooting stars – image from www.freeimages.gatag.net

Out there the night sky was oh-so-beautiful. Stars stretched out forever, a milky blanket thick with light. The ground was soft and warm beneath me, and I grew to love the smell and sounds of the night. My loneliness would melt away and I would gaze in wonder at the world above me.  Over the coming months it changed me somehow. I found myself calmer, more open to things, and I realised that I didn’t need to fit in, or try to be someone other than who I was.

I began to see things I’d never noticed before – plants, animals, tracks in the dirt, scuds of clouds in the sky. I realised that the Kimberley was full of crystals, all lying in the dirt at my feet.  Slowly my collection grew. Amethysts, clear quartz, smoky quartz, carnelians, dusty agates and river-smoothed wonders.

The big vast emptiness filled me up with…

I still can’t tell you what it was. Magic?  Spirit?

So much of my life unravelled at my feet during that time, and looking back I can see that it was more a freeing than a falling apart. But that’s now. With the wisdom of hindsight. At the time I was lonely, isolated and afraid of whatever was dwelling at the edge of my consciousness. Change was coming, although I did not understand what that could possibly mean.

And with every owl I saw, that feeling grew…

I’m sorry to keep you hanging for my Owl and Orchard Man Story, and for my ongoing adventures in the Kimberley. Truth is, I’m just not up to writing much right now.

So instead, I shall share some of my favourite green healing stones.  You might find them useful too.

“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
~ Roald Dahl

Hi. I’m Randall. I live in Nicole’s garden, and I keep an eye on things for her. I’ve given her the morning off from blogging.  She was up all night with the hooting owls, the flutter of bats, and all manner of strange visitations.

The Orchard Man was back, swinging his lantern around in the cold last night. And some other lady. She was new, the lady.  Haven’t seen her before.

It happens like that around here sometimes. Oh, the things I have seen…

But of course, we gnomes never tell.  We pride ourselves in that.

Maybe Nicole will tell you all about it herself one day.  Or maybe not.

For now, I’m getting back to minding the crystals, and watching young Harry run around like a loon on the rain-soaked grass. Nice talking to you.  Might see you around.

My Favourite Crystals for Grounding

“In my opinion, it’s more interesting to see magic happening in a world that feels grounded. If the world is already crazy, then anything can happen. So it’s better to start with something real.” ~ Michel Gondry

Being grounded is all about being centered within our body, having a sense of calm, and enjoying a deep connection and engagement with the world around us. When we are grounded we make better decisions, we behave in ways that are more authentic, and we own our power.

But sometimes we become unsettled by life.  Too much sugar and caffeine, not enough sleep, stress, trauma, interacting with unbalanced people, hormonal imbalance, a big shock, taking other people’s energy into our own aura (healers are often guilty of this!) – any of these things can leave us feeling ungrounded.

Symptoms of being ungrounded include:

  • feeling vague and unable to focus
  • anxiety with no cause
  • sudden dizziness
  • falling asleep while meditating
  • ‘cranky and out of sorts’ that comes on for no reason
  • hungry but food doesn’t satisfy you
  • inability to sleep
  • heaviness in the body
  • feeling ‘spaced out’
  • emotional and over-reactive
  • craving sugar and junk food
  • nausea
  • mental confusion
  • inability to focus on simple tasks
  • feeling like someone just unplugged your power cord
  • sudden exhibition of the same unpleasant thoughts or emotions of someone you were recently with

* Please be aware that some of these symptoms are also signs of a more serious illness.  Use your best judgement, and if in doubt, always seek medical advice.

I’ve written about ways to stay grounded or to move back into that grounded energy here:

Staying Grounded in Uncertain Times

However, when faced with a situation where one of my students or clients needs to get grounded fast, I am a big fan of rocks.  Crystals are super grounding tools, and so easy to use.  All you need to do is hold one, wear one or slip one into your pocket.

Here are some of my favourite grounding stones:

Black Tourmaline

I just love this stone! It is so powerful it can slam you back into your body fast, but gee, it never feels rough or violent.  It’s so gentle in the way that it treats you that I find it perfect for children, sensitive souls and those people experiencing deep emotional turmoil.  It also anchors your into your Earth Star Chakra (about 12 to 18 inches below your feet) and keeps your Earth Star Chakra open and connected into the earth. I never leave home without one…

A tourmalinated quartz will do a similar job, although less powerfully, but it will also keep your aura shielded, strong and bright.

Jasper

Who doesn’t love jasper?  There are so many varieties of this earthy stone, and all of them will work with grounding you, so I always advise you to choose what you’re attracted to or what strongly repels you.

Jasper helps you feel at home in your body, and at home in the world. It is wonderful for transmuting negativity and heavy emotions, replacing them with a sense of wellbeing and emotional balance. It realigns your chakras and ‘snaps you into place’.

Jasper is gentle, and it takes a little while for the affects to be felt, but that’s why I favour it for people with long-term imbalances like anxiety and depression, ADD, ADHD, post traumatic stress, bi-polar or chronic illness.  It has a strong mothering energy, and it is a superb nurturer.

I’ve included some charts of the various jaspers below – as you can see, there are many beautiful stones to choose from.

DSC00385

Bloodstone

Bloodstone is actually a base form of chalcedony and the red spots that look like blood, hence giving this stone its name, are dots of iron oxide or blood red jasper (see jasper above).

Bloodstone is a crystal I use a lot with clients who are are suffering the effects of toxicity – be that toxins from diet (sugars, artificial sweeteners, chemicals etc), the effects of being in a toxic relationship or working/living with toxic people, or toxins from long-term illness, infections or pathogens.

This crystal gives courage, and aids mental and emotional clarity.  It strongly detoxifies your physical, emotional and energetic bodies, and allows you to gain strength and energy.  It anchors and connects your heart, base and earth star chakra, and strongly gets you ‘out of your head and into your heart’. Bloodstone helps you stand firmly  in your own truth.

Green Aventurine

When you’re overwhelmed, jaded, broken-hearted, exhausted and at the end of your rope Green Aventurine is a perfect grounding stone for you. This stone is a variety of quartz, with fuschite and mica inclusions.

Green Adventurine cuts through misery and enables us to feel joy again.  It helps us to remember that we are in a body (as opposed to living bogged down in feelings or emotions) and it is very healing for the nervous system, lymph and circulation.

A positive side affect of this stone, besides grounding us back into our bodies and opening us up to joy again, is that we often feel inclined to eat better, to exercise and enjoy the benefits of living in a body.  It helps re-engage us with the physical aspect of ourselves and the world around us.

It is also strongly connected to the Devic Kingdom and Fairy Realms. Needless to say, most children adore this stone!

Septarian Nodules

This attractive combination of minerals include aragonite, calcite, chalcedony, limestone and mudstone (the grey muddy bits!).  Septarian Nodules aren’t for beginners.  I use them to rebalance people who have become ‘unbalanced’ doing psychic work, energetic healing, counselling or within a therapy-based business.

They clear our psychic connection, anchor us into our base and earth star chakras, clear out and balance ALL chakras, and help us to come back to ‘true’. Awesome for clearing energies and entities from our aura just by holding the stone.

* Not for prolonged or daily use.  See this as part of your emergency toolkit.

Unakite

Unakite combines a form of red jasper with epidote (the green part of the stone).  I use this stone for grounding people who are emotionally distressed after experiencing disruptive family or home life.

It is brilliant for anyone (including children!) going through relationship breakups, relationship transitions or life transitions.  It encourages strength, openness and optimism.  It is very restorative for the physical body and encourages healthy sleep patterns.

Pearls

I know you’re probably shrugging your shoulders here, wondering why I have included pearls, as they are an ocean ‘stone’.  But I love the gentle mothering energy of pearls and mother-of-pearl.  It is perfect for babies, the elderly, the dying, anyone who is very weak or frail, and for souls whose point of origin is starseed (ie not from Earth).

Pearls connect us to the wider cosmos, and help us feel at home in the greater scheme of things.  They also gently connect us into our Higher Selves, helping us to feel connected, grounded and expanded.

Choosing Crystals To Attract Love ♥ Part 2

“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.”
― Dr. Seuss

Can you use crystals to manifest love in your life?

You bet!

But let’s be clear that you can use them at attract ANY kind of love.  Romantic love, friendship, a creative project, dream job, a holiday that you adore, a baby…

I’m going to show you two ways today of calling in love.  The first is very easy and conventional.  The second feels amazing, and is much more ‘witchy’.  They both work well, so choose the method that most resonates with you.

First of all, let’s look at some crystals that would be helpful for this exercise:

Clear Quartz – The perfect stone for Soul Mates and Life Partners.  It can also be used for any other love purpose too. A great all-rounder.  It doesn’t matter if it’s a tumbled stone, a point, a shape, or a cluster.  Go with what feels right for you!

Danburite – This is one of the scrummiest stones I know for fertility and babies.

Amethyst – This is useful for calling in spiritual Soul Mates and also for connecting strongly with your Guides

Green Aventurine – The best crystal for attracting real and lasting friendship into your life.  Green Aventurine literally sparkles with that joyous energy of heart expansion.

Fluorite – my favourite stone for calling in creative ideas that I will adore.  Terrific for writers, musicians, artists and other creative types, or for folks who are looking for some artistic pathway to fall in love with.

Citrine – Use this stone for calling in your dream job, your perfect project, a career path that you will LOVE.  Great for finding your direction when you’re unclear.

You can actually choose ANY crystal that calls to you, when you’re choosing something to bring love into your life.  The most important thing is that you FEEL drawn to and happy with your choice.  I have been known to walk into a crystal shop, absently pick up a rock without realising, and then find it still clutched in my hand as I am leaving.  Sometimes I have not been visually attracted to the stone, but I knew I had to have it.  It became un-put-down-able…  Those sorts of stones are just fine too!

Feel free to review this general information on choosing and preparing crystals too, before we complete our activity for today:

Choosing A Crystal

Cleansing and Connecting with Crystals

Now, let’s work with our chosen stone.

Method one:

  1. Activate your hand chakras
  2. Take your crystal in one hand (left for men, right for women) and hold it up in front of your heart.
  3. Place your other hand just above the crystal, so that it is cupped between the energy of your two hands.
  4. Pour energy and light into your stone, and then set the clear intent of what you want.  You don’t need words.  Just FEEL the energy of a new love, a new baby, a new job, whatever it is that you are seeking to call to you.  Intensify that energy as you pour it into the stone.
  5. Say aloud, or strongly in your head I call you to me now.  I call you to my heart. Thank you.
  6. Finish by closing both hands over the stone and offering up a prayer or words of gratitude to the Universe.
  7. Now that your stone is programmed you can keep it on you, or place it by your bed, desk or on your windowsill.

Method Two:

  1. Follow Method One first! Then take your programmed crystal and go outside.
  2. Find a spot to lie down on the earth. Lie right down on the ground so that you are facing the sky. You can choose to hold your crystal in your hand, or place it on your chest, over your heart. Close your eyes, and feel a deep connection into the earth.
  3. Offer up a prayer of thanks, affirming that you now draw this love into your life.
  4. Feel your heart begin to spin.  When the energy is strong, imagine an energy like a tornado rising out of your heart.  Feel your body strongly connected into the earth, while the energy from your heart soars out into the universe like a swirling, spiralling storm. Let your heart energy roam until it connects into something.  You won’t get a name or a face – you’ll just get a feeling. Say with strong intention I welcome you into my life now. Thank you.
  5. Pull that feeling of connection back into your heart, and then allow your awareness to settle back into your chest.
  6. Become aware of the earth beneath you as you come back into your body.  Take a moment or two and relax before you stand up again.

Win a Crystal, Chosen Just for You!

Last week I announced that in honour of the unexpected success of Cauldrons and Cupcakes, and my wonderful readers,  I would give away three prizes.  The first was this beautiful little book by Simone de Haas, titled every.day.presence – and the winner is Anita!  Congratulations, Anita.

This week I am giving you an opportunity to win a crystal, chosen by me based upon your energies and needs.  From my vast collection of stones that I charged up during the Transit of Venus earlier this year, I am sure that I shall find something that perfectly suits you.  I’ll also send you some simple instructions on how to work with your new crystal in meditation, as well as a channelled personal message about the qualities of your new stone.

I love working with crystals. I use them in meditation, in healing, and to enhance my writing and creative work. I use them extensively with my students when I am teaching spiritual and metaphysical courses. I often feel like I’m handing out lollies as I gift them with little bags of stones…

Naturally I also use them for my own psychic work too!  If you don’t know much about crystals you can check out some of my posts here:

All you need to do to be in the running to win your own special crystal is to leave a comment below.  I’ll put all of the names into my Tibetan Singing Bowl next Monday, 22nd October, and choose one at random. The winner, and the final gift, shall be announced on Tuesday 23th October’s blog. Feel free to share this post with your friends too. I trust that we are going to make some crystal magic happen with this give-away.

Thank you again, from my heart to yours, for all of your support and company as I blog my crazy life! ♥ xoxo

A Powerful Time for Clearing and Change!

How have you been feeling, this past week or so? Not quite yourself? A little out of sorts? Take the poll below and see if any of this resonates for you – you might not have felt like this continuously (indeed, I hope you haven’t!), but if anything sounds familiar then tick the box!

Maybe you’ve noticed some of the events unfolding in this last week or so, including major solar flares, big full moon, and the discovery of what’s known as the god-particle.

We’re in the middle of incredible energetic flux right now. Sensitive souls will really be feeling it – but you signed up for this, so it’s time to start using this powerful energy of shift to create change. After all, isn’t that what 2012 is all about?

Over the next few months we have an incredible Universal Energy assisting us to  deal with clearing family patterns, ancestral patterns and our own patterns of thought, behaviour – even generational medical conditions that no longer serve us.

By working on your own patterns and emotions you will also be contributing to clearing them for your family line – both above (mothers, fathers, grandparents, great-grandparents etc) and below you (children, grandchildren etc).

You can do this yourself through prayer and meditation, reiki and other modalities you are comfortable with, but it’s also a great idea to seek out skilled healers and practitioners to assist you with your clearing and healing.  These might include natural health care providers, doctors, psychologists, counsellors, body workers and massage therapists, spiritual healers and intuitive and psychic counsellors or whatever else you are drawn to.  Remember that many souls have incarnated at this time expressly to help with this great change and unfolding.  You might well be one of them!

I know the energy might not feel all that great while we’re going through these shifts, but trust that the outcomes will be positive. Hold an intention for the Highest Good, for yourself and others.

What else can you do right now?

Crystals will be a great addition to your toolkit. (Some information on how to work with crystals here.)  Black tourmaline, snowflake obsidian and jasper will help keep you grounded. Citrine and turquoise will clear your head. Rose quartz will nourish your heart. Carnelian, Bloodstone and Hematite will strengthen and protect your physical body. Amethyst, clear quartz, sugalite and charoite will help with psychic connection.

Spend some time in nature. Our planet has a great capacity to nurture, ground and heal us. Unplug from the digital world for a while, and reconnect with your humanity.

Avoid toxic people and situations. (More on this in tomorrow’s blog!)

Honour your sensitivity. (Info on How to live as a Sensitive Soul here)

This is also a great time for an outpouring of creativity, for sudden clarity about your direction with career and relationships. Don’t be surprised to find that as things clear, life starts to rocket ahead for you in all sorts of wonderful ways, enhanced with much synchronicity and beautiful new connections.

I’ve also recorded a short Guided Meditation to help with this time.  All you need to do is find somewhere to sit or lie quietly for seven minutes, and then just follow my voice.

Nicole Cody’s Guided Meditation for healing old patterns

Allow yourself to feel a bit excited… It’s an amazing time we’re living in. Bless ♥

Transit of Venus, Solar Flares, Polar Shifts, Eclipses and Sensitive People

Image from universetoday.com

So, you’re a sensitive soul?  If you’re not sure, you can read more about ‘sensitive’ people here, to see if you identify with any of the common characteristics:

Living as a Sensitive Soul

One thing that sensitive souls will be noticing right now is how all of this astrological shift and change can affect us. What makes us sensitive – that ability to feel and sense energies and information that might not be so readily apparent to others – is also the thing that can make us more vulnerable to astrological and energetic phenomena.  We are more influenced by the energetic shifts and changes, and can be affected in a number of ways, not all of them pleasant.

We may experience a sudden draining of our energy, feel heavy and fatigued, or ache as though we are coming down with the flu.  We may find that we feel depressed or anxious for no reason, or that our sleep patterns are disrupted.  We may feel unbalanced, not quite in our body, suffer from headaches or fuzzy thinking, or be irrational, teary, angry or upset – once again with no apparent cause.  We may become highly over-sensitive – to foods, people, weather, noise and light.

Image from hazyshapes.blogspot.com

It will always pass.  But when you feel this way, check things out.  Is there something happening with the planets or sun? Are we experiencing geological shifts within our own planet? Are you in close proximity to a lot of electromagnetic energy?

What to do when you’re affected:

If you’re feeling light, vague, airy, disconnected, anxious, fretful or scattered then do what you can to ground:

  • favour foods that are dense; such as grains, root vegetables, dairy, meat and eggs
  • eat larger portions, less often (no less than three meals a day though!)
  • take a powdered magnesium supplement
  • avoid sugar and stimulants such as caffeine
  • spend time in nature – sit, stand or lie on the ground, barefoot if possible
  • rest
  • avoid crowds, wind, lots of noise, and places that are busy or frenzied
  • choose and wear or hold grounding crystals such as jasper, garnet, hematite, pyrite, howlite, bloodstone, sodalite, dessert rose, tourmaline, tiger eye or tiger iron

You could also try my grounding meditation:

Nicole Cody’s Guided Meditation for Spiritual Grounding

If you’re feeling exhausted, angry, disoriented, achy, drained, depressed and flat you need to raise your vibration.  Things that help with this include:

  • eating a predominantly plant based diet, and eating lightly and often
  • consume fresh juices that favour a combination of fruits and vegetables (at room temperature)
  • get moving – some yoga, tai chi, qigung or walking will help
  • rest
  • drink plenty of water and herbal teas
  • take a powdered magnesium supplement
  • keep warm, or find ways to generate warmth within your body
  • avoid cold foods, including ice-cream, dairy and cold milks such as soy
  • avoid the news, and things/people/places that are likely to upset or depress you
  • favour crystals that uplift our energy, such as rose quartz, amethyst, smoky quartz, clear quartz, citrine, agates, jade, aventurine, fluorite, carnelian and amber

You can also use my meditation for developing and strengthening psychic connection:

Nicole Cody’ Guided Meditation for Developing Psychic Connection

Know that sensitivity is a blessing.  You just need to know how to manage it.  Know that you’re not alone, and that what you’re feeling is perfectly normal – for a sensitive soul! Bless ♥ xx

Hey Sister, You Okay?

Image from holmsteen.dk

I was looking forward to Saturday. In the last few weeks I’ve supported a friend through the end stages of terminal cancer, holding her hand til she passed, ridden the roller coaster of supporting an addict in recovery, and juggled my daily work and writing. Saturday was this wonderful window of calm in front of me like a soft pillow to lay my weary head.

Nothing went to plan for me. My do-nothing day of leisure and self-replenishment which I had so looked forward to became about helping others through various crises and melt-downs.  It’s okay.  The Universe obviously cleared my calender so I’d be available for the people who needed me most.  But it was an emotionally draining day, capping a difficult few weeks, and it left me wrung out.

I was driving through the inner city late yesterday when the traffic suddenly slowed.  Cars tooted their horns.  People yelled and gestured. I though there must have been a dog on the road.

The traffic slowed to a stop.  I couldn’t see what was happening, so I said a quiet prayer, asking that the animal be okay and be guided back to safety.  Finally the cars began moving again, swerving around something in the middle of the road.  Some stopped to hurl abuse as they drove past. I craned my neck, trying to see what was obstructing our way.

Imagine my horror and disbelief when I saw an elderly aboriginal woman in the middle of the road.  She was just sitting there, a shopping bag beside her on the ground, one shoe off, grazed knees.  I pulled my car over to the side as soon as I could find a park and raced back to check on her.

“Hey, Sister,” she croaked at me as I got closer. “Can you see me? All the rest of your mob think I’m invisible.”

“Hey, Sister,” I called to her.  ”I see you. You okay?”

She swung her head towards me, squinting in the sun, but said nothing.  I waited for a car to pass and crossed over to her.

“Hi, I’m Nicole.  Are you okay?  Do you need some help?”

She nodded her head yes.

I helped her up, and over to the footpath. She was unsteady on her feet and I wondered if I should call an ambulance.

“Sorry, love. I’m real sorry.”  She leaned heavily on my arm.  ”I just live along here. Too late eating lunch and my strength’s gone. I came over all dizzy. I’ve got sugar,” she said weakly.

“You’re diabetic?” I asked as we walked up some steps to a small flat.

“Yes.”

I got her inside, and she asked me to make her a sandwich, while she ate some jellybeans.  Then her neighbour popped in and said she would make her friend a cup of tea and stay with her until she came ‘right’ again.

Before I left I asked if there was anyone I could call, or if she wanted me to take her to the doctor.

The old aboriginal lady patted my hand. “I’m alright now I’m home. You know, you’re a true nice girl,” she said.  ”Brought up proper. Your mother and grandmother, you do them proud. Here….”  Reaching over to a box she pulled something out. “This is for you.”

She opened a small drawstring bag and put the contents in my hand, one by one.

A bag full of treasures

“This shell, it’s from up my country.”

She placed it on my palm, and tiny grains of sand stuck to my fingers.  I wanted to hold it to my nose and smell the sea.  Suddenly I was homesick for my little farm at Byron Bay with a physical ache.

“Got this stone from the river.  See how nice and smooth it is.” It was a piece of clear quartz, tumbled milky, and still luminous. I felt such comfort, and thought of Angels.

This one,” she held up a twisted grey rock, “I got this one off the beach. It reminds me of a baby wrapped up tight in his blanket, trying to talk to you. Feels real nice in your hand.”

“This one – it’s coral.  Looks like an alien head with them two eyes.” She chuckled. “Friendly fella for watching over you.”

“And this last one, he’s a fossil crab, real old from the old times.  Good for protecting your soft heart.”

I left with brimming eyes, embarrassed by her kindness.

And I never asked her name.

Today I’m holding these precious treasures in my hands and feeling humbled and awed. I wonder if she knew how much these things would mean to me, or what they symbolise after so hard a day, so hard a week.

Hey Sister, you okay?

I feel like it was HER watching out for ME.
