“Every morning was a cheerful invitation to make my life of equal simplicity, and I may say innocence, with Nature herself.”
~ Henry David Thoreau, Walden
Autumn is a magical time at our farm. Gentle showers soak the ground during the night, and in the morning thick mist wraps itself around the mountains.
As the sun burns the mist away to reveal the wide blue sky, fragile spiderwebs sparkle with dewdrops bright as diamonds.
Everything feels fresh, and lush with promise.
I fill myself up on the kindness and verdant energy of nature.
Up in the orchard, I hear a commotion. It’s Eric, the very shy Echidna. Every morning he comes out to nuzzle through the soft soil, and the cattle egrets wait for the worms he disturbs.
Today he’s been joined by a girlfriend. Love is in the air…
Hi Nicole I love Eric and his girlfriend I’ve never heard of a echidna …they look like our hedgehogs .It’s so stange to hear you talk of Autumn, because here in the U.K we are just enjoying spring . I love the seasons don’t you ?

Reminds me of a joke – how do echidnas make love? very carefully. Or one an aboriginal man told me – a fella comes back home after having caught an echidna, every he sees asks “can i have one of the back legs?” over and over, everyone he meets asks him the same question – at the end, in exasperation he cries “it’s an echidna not a centipede!”. What is the echidna equivalent of “love is in the air”? maybe love is in the quills? Ok must be some time for JPY – a little echidna mating music to echo over your fields! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNC0kIzM1Fo&feature=kp
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but your words paint a million pictures! So beautiful Nicole! : )
