Was He Born This Way?

“Right or wrong, it’s very pleasant to break something from time to time.” ~ Fyodor Dostoyevsky

This is a picture of Harry, known to some as Cafe Dog. It is, in fact, our very first picture of Harry, taken two years ago. Pretty cute, huh?

In retrospect, there is a worrying glint of mischief in that small dog’s eye.

Just now we are spending an awful lot of time in the city. Our family are very ill. They need us, and we want to be there for them. But the doggies are revolting! There’s no farm to run around on, no freedom, no fun. Instead they have endless days of being cooped up in town.

Yesterday Harry decided he’d had enough.

First he ate a book. Paper all over the house. Think confetti.

Then he ate a pillow. Stuffing all over the house. Think snow.

This morning it got personal. 2015-06-06 06.08.28That’s my new slipper. Manked up, chewed and ripped.2015-06-06 06.08.51 Harry tried to hide the evidence, squeezing in between the lounges into his favourite cubby hole with the slipper. 2015-06-05 17.42.20 Which he promptly hid with his body. 2015-06-05 17.42.32 Then, seeing I hadn’t yelled yet, thought I hadn’t noticed, and acted all innocent and ready to go to the cafe… 2015-06-05 17.42.34 Naughty? Cute? Totally lovable?

Yep, I reckon he was born this way.

I had intended a post about something else this morning, but now I’m taking Cafe Dog for a big long walk and a coffee date. Have a beautiful day, and we’ll see you tomorrow, Lots of love, Nicole and Harry <3 xoxo

Hi! I'm Nicole Cody. I am a writer, psychic, metaphysical teacher and organic farmer. I love to read, cook, walk on the beach, dance in the rain and grow things. Sometimes, to entertain my cows, I dance in my gumboots. Gumboot dancing is very under-rated.

  1. Hi Nicole, just catching up on your posts. Your stories about Harry are always so humorous and give some of your readers the opportunity to highlight his side of the tale so amusingly, adding to our enjoyment of his antics.

Holding yourself, Ben and your family in healing love, thought and prayer. <3 Michelle xx

  2. Awe Harry, I totally get where you were coming from. What was your mother thinking bringing new furry, floppy eared, doe eyed, button nosed interlopers into your domain to compete for the affections of her heart. Seriously the next thing she would be expecting is that you would accompany her to the café for coffee, whilst she had those interlopers on her feet !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Dear Nicole, I sit by my husbands hospital bedside, it is only a matter of time they say. We have been together just about 40 years, and I am greedy, I want more, and so does he. The love affair is not over you see. He has always encouraged me to contact you, and I did once to leave a comment. Your blog I read faithfully each day. Your trials and your happy, all that you share of your life, and today, cafe dog is in Trouble, again, and he makes me laugh aloud. We have never met, yet your own courage gives me strength . And I thank you for the love and caring the support you pour into your blog. I call you friend.

    1. Dearest Barbara
I read your comment and I feel like I have received a most beautiful hug. Undoubtedly that is how the alchemy of love can catch you by surprise in the most everyday simple exchanges. Thankyou. Thankyou. Thankyou. How you have shared about your 40 year love affair with your dear husband has my heart skipping a beat. Celebrating love with you. Lamenting an impending loss with you. In awe of our shared human experience.
May you continue to know the Blessing of Loves Embrace.

    2. Dear Barbara, I read your comment this morning with my own husband beside me, rubbing my back gently as I wept a few silent tears. We know that kind of love too, you see. I’m so grateful that my blog helps you in some way. I always feel, when I sit down to write, that I am writing to my friends. That you would be welcome at my table. And each night in my meditations I always include my readers and their families, sending you all love and healing. May this time with your beloved be long, gentle and filled with blessings. All my love, and some big hugs from me and Cafe Dog <3 Nicole xoxo

  4. I think he made his point quite clearly. You didn’t need to be psychic to figure that one out. With no words, how else was he going to express his frustration. 😉 Adorable, and he didn’t like the slippers or that particular book. 🙂

  5. Isn’t he just the most adorable chappie …he is just putting his four paws down . He needs that walk and that coffee . Love to your families it’s a difficult time ….especially nor cafe dog bless…you liked those slippers now didn’t you .

  6. I just love it, when Harry or Bert help write the post! Sending much love to your “pack”. And lots of love to your families with get well wishes!

  7. Filling kongs with something yummy then freezing and handing out when you have to go out will help him use up some of that extra energy. Takes a while to clean them out when they are frozen so they last a lot longer so you come home to less mischief!

  8. He’s a cattle dog and they’re puppies for a good long time. I’ve got a standard poodle that’s got the same problem. It’s a good thing they’re cute.
