Do What Makes Your Heart Sing

“I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” ~ Steve Jobs

What makes your heart sing?

You know, the thing that lights you up just thinking about it. The thing that brings you comfort. The thing that happily steals whole hours or longer so you look up from it and wonder where the time has gone. The thing that puts a spring in your step, a song in your heart, a twinkle in your eye.

It will be different for each of us. We all have our own pleasures. I have a dear friend who loves to spend an entire day at a beauty parlour getting waxed and plucked and massaged – having her acrylic nails done, with champagne and dress-ups. I’m the complete opposite. I’d rather dig in the garden, and go meet up at my favourite cafe with all our farmer friends, muddy-booted and with dirty dogs curled at our feet as we talk about the weather and the seasons. My friend and I laugh that what makes our hearts sing can be such different songs. We’d never swap for the world!

Living a dream-filled, heart-centred and satisfying life isn’t about fame or money or winning or public acknowledgement. It’s about emotional contentment, soul satisfaction and living life in ways that we find nourishing and supportive.

One of my clients loves to sing. In fact she has become world-famous as a singer. To the point where singing doesn’t light her up in quite the same way any more. Because of the pressure and the fact that singing is now a job. A very, very successful and demanding job. So singing doesn’t fulfil her soul in quite the same way anymore, unless she is singing at home alone, or in church or in the shower. What excites her now is crochet. And writing songs. And baking cupcakes in the beautiful kitchen that singing has brought to her. Simple pleasures.

Souls can be made lighter by making music, by crafting or writing or reading or baking or beading. Surfing or hiking could be your thing. Drinking tea with friends, a latte and a magazine on your own in some fine corner cafe, movies, cuddles, doona days, shopping days, family, your beloved.

Life is precious, and so is your journey. No matter what you need to do to exist and survive and to get through each day, make sure that there is also time for the things that light you up and that nourish and feed your spirit. That’s where the magic is. That’s where the happy-making, health-making, satisfaction-making part of our journey happens. In these small and ordinary details. In the time we take for ourselves and our souls.

What’s your magic? What makes your soul sing? Plan on doing some of that really soon. Your well-being and joy depend upon it!

Hi! I'm Nicole Cody. I am a writer, psychic, metaphysical teacher and organic farmer. I love to read, cook, walk on the beach, dance in the rain and grow things. Sometimes, to entertain my cows, I dance in my gumboots. Gumboot dancing is very under-rated.

  1. I recognised those blue beads and then looked closer and recognised myself in the corner! I miss beading, it definitely is something that makes my heart sing. Going way back to primary school when I was first introduced to “Indian beads”, I loved the focus it took to handle and thread those tiny glass beads and getting in a flow with the patterns of colours. Perhaps it’s time to source some supplies! Thankyou very much for the reminder <3 <3

  2. Simple pleasures yes. Nicole I am taking a bit of a blog break until January in order to quietly explore my own simple pleasures. Your blog is a godsend and I wish you and yours a wonderful Christmas. Julie xxx

  3. Getting lost in a novel, walking and swimming on the beach, hugs from my loved ones, dancing to live music and camping are some of the things that make my heart sing. And reading your beautiful blog! thank you lovely lady xxxx
