Being Me Means Being Curly!

“Don’t compromise yourself – you’re all you have.”
~ John Grisham

Hi, Lovelies!

I did something a little out of the ordinary for me, yesterday. I went to the hairdresser.

I usually don’t love the whole hairdressing thing. Everyone always wants to straighten my hair, and give me the sorts of styles that take hours of upkeep. And that’s SO not me.

I was born a curly girl. I have hair that needs washing once a week, or maybe once a fortnight. I brush it just before I wash it, bit other than that it just does its own thing. I don’t own a comb. I don’t own a hairdryer. I don’t have any styling irons or products for that. I’m low-key when it comes to hair.

Earlier this year I went to a new hairdresser and I told her I love my curly hair and that it’s part of who I am. I came home looking like this:

You might wonder how that happened. After my trim the hairdresser began drying my hair and suddenly I realized she was drying it straight. When I asked her why she was getting rid of my curls, she said ‘Because curly hair is ugly. Anyway, a change is good and it’s too late to go back to curls now. Hubby will love the new you! You should come back later this week and get a chemical straightening treatment so you never have to have ugly hair again.’

You can bet I never went back! It was so confronting to look in the mirror! I didn’t feel like myself at all.

Eep!

So, yesterday I went to a hairdresser who specializes in curls, who loves curls, who celebrates curls.

This time I came home looking a lot more like myself!

Here I am at the end of the day, exhausted but a curly girl again. Nothing was done to my hair except that it was loved up, well cut and treated kindly. Hooray for that.

No matter what your own personal style is, make sure to stay true to you.

Lots of love, Nicole xx

Hi! I'm Nicole Cody. I am a writer, psychic, metaphysical teacher and organic farmer. I love to read, cook, walk on the beach, dance in the rain and grow things. Sometimes, to entertain my cows, I dance in my gumboots. Gumboot dancing is very under-rated.

  1. Your hair is lovely Nicole. I was always jealous of thick curly hair .. mine was blonde now almost brown, partly as a result of having to cover up in Aussie sun, and very fine so I need it short and to wash it most days … ah loving ourselves as we are is an art and a life skill!

  2. I actually like both styles on you. You are a beautiful lady. I do agree though, stay true to you. My sister has always wanted me to have short hair … because that’s what she likes. I’m going to have long hair till the day I die, hopefully 100 something haha! 😀

  3. Your hair is amazing! I can’t believe that hairdresser told you curls were ugly. They suit you very nicely 🙂
I’m glad this experience was better xx

    1. I wonder if that’s because they don’t know what to do with curly hair! (And because like most of us, they’ve been programmed to think that beautiful, ‘well-kept’ hair is necessarily straight!

I used to go to someone who wouldn’t quite diss my curls/waves, but would keep advising me to wash and blow-dry my hair EVERYDAY! His reason was this would keep my hair clean and free of dandruff (in my case a dry scalp)!
      Go figure!

I’m so glad you found someone who loves and celebrates your curls as much as you do, Nicole! You really do have gorgeous curls! <3

  4. Curly hair is ugly…I wanted to stab her with the scissors when I read that. I love my curls but every now and then I like to straighten it for a change…but I love my curls!

  5. From one curly to another…..I was a hairdresser in the 80’s with curls were it. My Boss was big in the hair world an did lots of shows….I was sometimes his ‘permed’ model…(though I used to whisper to around that it was mine ; D)

To me it’s a sign of joy, of relaxation adventure and ancient wisdom….

I love my hair I am not a slave to it but a part of who I truly am….

    Freedom…..

    And bouncy…..

Love you, love your thick, gorgeous, womanly hair….

Untamed….adventurous and I could keep going on…..I LOVE CuRLs

  6. Totally relate to this post. I once and once only succumbed to allowing my longtime hairdresser to straighten my hair. I have a fringe normally & he side parted it. I actually looked and felt like ‘Prue’…very North Shore (no disrespect intended) and felt ridiculous. Off I went to the local supermarket and ran into 2 long time friends, one stared in total disbelief and said ‘what in the hell have you done’ and the other laughed, yes laughed. I went straight home jumped in the shower and let my curls loose and loose they are. Love your shorter hair and have always loved your curls…oohlala…a satin scarf for sleeping is SO next level Goddess..XXXOO

  7. I love your curls! I think everyone I’ve met so far has hair that fits them perfectly, and with a loving cut, hair will look its best. If someone rather likes their hair straight when they have curls or vice versa, go for what makes you happy. For someone else to declare your hair is ugly, especially a hairdresser, is so weird, and to mea bit ofa try at power play.

    1. Anke, I agree – your hair is a form of self-expression, so wear it how YOU like it. I think the previous hairdresser thought I was a bit too much of a hippy and it was her duty to transform me to something more acceptable. Her salon is in a neighbourhood with a lot of wealthy and well-groomed women who drive expensive cars and wear designer labels. I didn’t feel at home there at all. The salon I went to yesterday was run by a married couple, and it was buzzingly busy but there were no pretensions. I felt supported and understood, rather than judged. A much better experience! Hugs to you xx

  8. How beautiful you look!I love your curls. What a ridiculous thing for the previous hairdresser to sayI have hair that curls too but it grows up and out so I wear it short cos I like it that way.A d what other people say about me is none of my business.❤🌹

    1. It sounds like you have hair like me, Wendy! I kept mine short for years because I would always get to that Beppo-The-Clown stage where it turned into a massive fuzzball. The one benefit of getting sick and spending two years in bed was that my hair grew past the fuzzball stage and I have kept it long ever since. Thanks for your lovely words. It’s taken a lot of time for me to get comfortable posting pics of myself. I’m loving this new loved-up hair of mine too, and it was exciting to wake up this morning (I actually slept with my hair in a satin scarf because my hairdresser suggested that) and my hair stilled looked as good as yesterday. Woohoo! Big love to you xx
