The Blessings of My Neglected Garden

I wanted to rest my eyes on green meadows. I wanted to sit on green grass under the shade of a green tree. I wanted to eat cool green salads. I longed for arugula tossed with olive oil and parmesan, for asparagus tips dripping with melted butter, for a salad of sweet and bitter green leaves.

Hey, Lovelies.

It’s mid-summer here, and my kitchen garden at the farm has been sadly neglected. We are moving house soon, so I have also been running down the pantry, emptying the cupboards and the fridge, and, while that sounds like a good idea – and it is, in theory – by last night I had run out of dinner options.

All I had was a little parmesan, a few black olives, and the dregs of a bottle of tomato paste. I foraged further and found some breadmaking flour and dry yeast. Two cold bottles of beer were all that were hiding in the empty vegetable crisper. Nothing much inspirational there.

My wonderful neglected garden helped me out. I found fistfuls of wild arugula, tiny sweet red and orange cherry tomatoes, one small sweet red capsicum – all self-seeded from last year’s plants.

It was enough to make pizza.

The pizza was good.

It was so very simple.

A taste of things to come.

I’m also happy to report that we are well into the whole declutter, sort and pack process. (I’ll also be so glad to be finished, and hope then not to move again for a good long while!)

May you also make progress and be delighted by simple and nurturing acts this week, much love, Nicole xx

Hi! I'm Nicole Cody. I am a writer, psychic, metaphysical teacher and organic farmer. I love to read, cook, walk on the beach, dance in the rain and grow things. Sometimes, to entertain my cows, I dance in my gumboots. Gumboot dancing is very under-rated.
