Creeping Downstairs To Feed My Addiction

No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise in the writer, no surprise in the reader.

Robert Frost

Hey, Lovelies.

For November’s NaNoWriMo I have been getting up super early, and creeping downstairs before dawn to get my writing time in.

Normally I know what I will be working on when I start new story.

I’m what is known as a Pantser in the writing world. I don’t plot, or not much anyway. I prefer to wing it. But I usually have at least a vague idea of what the story will be about.

Not this time.

Each morning I am more and more eager to get to my desk. I have to know what happens next. Even though I am the author I have NO idea, and this story keeps twisting and turning and revealing things that make me cry or gasp or howl laughing.
So, today, like every other day in November, I found myself at my desk a little after 4am. Because I am doing my meditation an hour earlier, at 3am, I have time to myself before everyone else wakes up. On my way to my writing room each morning I stop and make a cup of tea. Each day, an hour in, I take a break and brew up a stovetop espresso, heat some milk, froth it and then pour it all into my favourite mug. Then I work for another hour.

I usually have a playlist when I write, but it’s proving too distracting so I am using this instead – it’s background noise of a sleeper train on a rainy evening. It find it relaxing and focusing all at once.

Today I forgot to drink my coffee until it was almost cold because I was engrossed in the story, and lulled by my train carriage clattering through the night.

Oh, for the first time in a long time writing feels so good. It’s such a delight.

I don’t know how long this flow will continue. It could all turn to shit today, or tomorrow.

But for now the thoughts are flowing, and my fingers are flying, and the words are accruing. Long may it last!

Love, train tracks, raindrops, good coffee and a full heart, Nicole xx

Hi! I'm Nicole Cody. I am a writer, psychic, metaphysical teacher and organic farmer. I love to read, cook, walk on the beach, dance in the rain and grow things. Sometimes, to entertain my cows, I dance in my gumboots. Gumboot dancing is very under-rated.
