As I sat with the weight of your stories yesterday I spent time alone on the hill behind our farm in the bright sunshine, thinking about you all and our shared experiences and emotions, and then again I thought of you as I sat by the sea while the shadows grew long in the afternoon.

As the day drew to a close I began a crystal grid for you, to hold space for your unfolding, your healing and your soul journey.

I crafted the grid to help you come back to your own inner wisdom, to a sense of peace and belonging. And I infused every stone with love.

Tomorrow I’ll write more about what’s in my heart right now. Until then know that you are seen and heard, and deeply loved.

Chronic Illness? This is a Spiritual Retreat for you!

I have a beautiful residential retreat coming up, from March 6 to 11 in Byron Bay, Australia. It’s a gentle retreat, a restorative retreat, whose focus is to help you develop and commit to a regular spiritual practice that nourishes, sustains and grows you.

When I think about this retreat, and the practices I will teach you, my heart swells with love and gratitude. These are the techniques I used on my own soul journey, as I moved from resistance into connection, from self-loathing to self-love, from fear into deep peace. These techniques are ones I still use daily, or often. They are what helped me to become more fully who I truly am, rather than who I thought people wanted me to be, or how I thought I ‘should’ be. Quite frankly, these practices have become the foundation of my spiritual and psychic life, and the reason I have been able to cope with suffering, pain and trauma. They are also the practices that have enhanced my gratitude, compassion and inner wisdom.

As many of you will know, I have suffered from serious illness and the limitations that creates for most of my adult life. In fact it was this chronic illness that first created the space for me to explore my own spirituality, intuitive and psychic abilities so much more deeply.

All of the techniques I will teach on this retreat, and the journey I shall guide you through, came to me when I was at my most unwell. Suffering and illness is often the doorway for profound spiritual awakening. I’m sure there are many of you who will resonate with that as the truth of your own journey too.

I’ve had inquiries from people with chronic fatigue and other debilitating illness, wanting to come to our next retreat but worrying if they are suitable or if they will cope. If that’s you let me reassure you… you’ll find a place to fit in and belong here in my Tribe.

Our Awakening to Spirituality Retreat is gentle. You’ll be supported to find your own rhythm for connection and inner journeying. There will be enough time to get from your room to the Hall and to the Dining Room. There is plenty of rest time and quiet time scheduled each day. Our days will be filled with meditation, reflection and simple spiritual practices, creative activities, good company, laughter, love and transformation. There will be friends to lean on, and we can find accommodation for you that is quiet and allows you additional solitude, or find a suitable roomie to give you company if that’s what you’re yearning for.

Our catering is geared for people with food intolerances, allergies and issues. Honestly, it won’t be a drama – we can work it all out. And you won’t be a burden to us, because this is how I’ve lived my life, and how I’ve often had to run these retreats as I have faced health issues myself. I understand pain. I understand fatigue. I understand anxiety and medication routines and incontinence and mobility issues and stupid dietary requirements that usually mean I have to lug my own food everywhere. I understand no one else understanding. I understand the emotional pain and isolation that illness can bring. I also understand end of life spaces. I’ve lived all of these things. I’ve created my retreats for my own needs, which are also yours. My retreats always have able-bodied people alongside people like me who have major health issues. And the health issues in the end are never a big thing. They are just something we manage so that we can focus on the real work – soul work.

Having a health issue is not a prohibitive factor for this event. In fact, it might be the perfect time for you to join us in a safe and non-judgmental atmosphere.

Your journey is my journey. Often when we are living with long-term illness, no answers to our health problems, a chronic or a terminal condition, we think that there will no longer be a place for us in the world. There is a place for you in mine.

I can show you spiritual practices that will help you to find your centre again, manage your pain, and give your life meaning and connection. I KNOW that when you begin to incorporate this soul-journey work and spiritual space in your own life that life will regain shape and satisfaction for you, no matter what your situation, or the nature of the days ahead of you.

How to Be At Home Wherever You Are

Did you read my post about the energies of October? Here’s a snippet of what I wrote:

“October is a month for nestling and cocooning. For finding and nurturing that sense of belonging. For doing the things that fill your heart with gladness, peace and contentment. It’s a month for working away on projects that have meaning for you, for quiet time and family time. It’s the perfect month for anything to do with heart and home.”

After the post went up I was flooded with emails and messages from people who are not living at home right now, or who travel a lot, or for whatever other reason are feeling displaced. The message below pretty much sums up the sentiment of all that correspondence:

Your October post brought tears to my eyes because I just moved to xxxxxx last week and feel anything but a sense of home and belonging. Physically I have a lovely house to live in but am struggling to feel settled and at peace with so much to adjust to. Am reaching out to try and make relationships and connections, I guess these things all take time! And I know that once I do start to feel like I belong here my PhD work will naturally flow out of that. If you have any special tips I would love love love to hear them xx

Home isn’t a place, it’s a feeling. So, how do you create an energy so that you can feel at home wherever you are? I have a few tips for that.

  1. If you travel a lot make a small grab bag of a few significant items. I have an old medicine bag that a dear friend gave me back at university. No matter where I have gone within Australia or the wider world I take this bag. Inside it are my meditation shawl, my journal, a deck of oracle cards, my runes, and a crystal or two. This supports my daily spiritual habits. Each day I journal, pull a card, and meditate. I can wrap myself in the shawl for comfort, even if I am not meditating, and the things that are important to me are kept close.   2. Have a ritual that feels like home, and keep that ritual as part of your daily routine. It might be a simple yoga or tai chi practice on the floor beside your bed. It might be going jogging. It could be checking facebook over a cappuccino at a local cafe. Rituals anchor us and centre us, no matter what is going on around us.
  3. Make sure you feel safe where you are. If you can’t feel safe you can’t relax. If where you are staying doesn’t feel safe to you, then maybe it’s time to find somewhere else to call home. Set personal boundaries too, and get time on your own. It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to close the door on the world every now and then.
  4. Make some playlists, and use music to bring you back to that place of inner peace.

  5. Create new relationships. When we travelled to Italy a few years ago we bought a coffee at the delicatessen on the corner near our apartment every morning. Within a week we were being greeted like locals. Take a chance and say hi to people. Connect where you can. Community gives us a sense of home and belonging as much as a personal space does.

  6. Take a hobby with you. It might be knitting, or writing, or sketching. Keep a small bag of items that support your hobby, and then spend time each day nurturing that interest.
  7. Food can also be a great anchor, especially when travelling or living in unfamiliar places. Many Australians I know go abroad with a jar of vegemite for their morning toast. My lovely writer friend travels with her favourite teapot and tea leaves, as well as whatever story she is working on.
  8. Decorate your room in your own taste. Maybe it’s a quilt you love, or a poster of your favourite band. When I travel I often pick flowers for my room, or make a small altar with leaves and found objects. Do you have a favourite mug? Take it with you. It’s okay to have an item that acts like a personal talisman of home. fnd-mug-shots_s4x3_lg
  9. Give yourself time to acclimatise to wherever you are. When something is unfamiliar of course it will feel strange or alienating. Go for a stroll. Take in the sights. Get your bearings.
  10. Scent can anchor you too. You might choose a brand of soap, or a body lotion, cologne or perfume that provokes feelings of nurture and comfort. Some people use essential oils or incense. A little lavender essential oil on my pillow at night helps me to get a good night’s sleep even if I am not in my own bed.
