Grown-Ups Get To Choose!

“We are always told that anyone over the age of eighteen should know what they are doing. The fact is, they don’t.”
~ Rae Earl

One of the most important lessons I ever learned in life came from a trip to the corner store at the end of the street.

I was cooking dinner and realised I had run out of potatoes. Ben walked with me for the company and busied himself at the front counter while I rifled through the potato bin. He bought himself a bag of mixed lollies (candies), all counted out into a striped paper bag.

I paid for my two potatoes and then reached out for a sweet. ‘Hey,’ said Ben pulling the packet out of reach. ‘These are mine. If you want some, get your own!’ He was joking, but it made me realise something.

Lollies? I never bought lollies. I hadn’t bought a bag of sweets like that since I was a kid and my pa would give me fifty cents to buy some in the holidays. ‘Okay, I will!’ I said defiantly. It was wonderful to choose them, and on the way home I felt like a kid as I let myself eat a couple right before dinner – something my mum would never have allowed. By the time we got in the front door Ben’s bag was empty. I told him off for ruining his dinner.

‘Nic,’ he said, ‘I’m a grown-up. I can do what I want. I would have eaten them all before dinner or after dinner, but I ate them now because I felt like them and they were delicious. That’s the thing about being an adult. You get to choose.’

It might sound weird but that was a revelation for me. I’d grown up in a strict household, and I carried that strictness and all of those rules into my own independent life. But now there was no-one to tell me what to do. I could do what I wanted. I was an adult. I didn’t even have to eat my dinner if I didn’t want to. I could just eat my bag of lollies.

That freedom of being able to eat breakfast cereal for dinner, to not make your bed or to stay in pyjamas all day can be an awesome thing. But so often we only use that freedom adulthood bestows upon us to make childish or insignificant choices. The rest of the time we let life happen to us, or we make a choice once and think we can no longer make another. These July energies support change and I want you to understand that as an adult there are many other things you can use this superpower of choice on.

You can choose to give up smoking. You can choose to get a better job. You can choose to stay and work on a marriage with problems. You can choose to leave a bad relationship. You can choose to sell everything up and travel the world. If you’re stuck, if you’re unhappy, if something’s not working YOU CAN CHOOSE SOMETHING ELSE INSTEAD.

What will you choose in July?

Much love, Nicole xx

Energies of July 2019

“We have to dare to be ourselves, however frightening or strange that self may prove to be.”
~ May Sarton

Hello, Lovelies!

At the beginning of every month, I discuss the energies and gifts of the month ahead and how we can best use them to make our lives satisfying, meaningful and productive. I also choose a card to support the energies of the month. The deck I am using this year is The Good Tarot by Colette Baron-Reid, and July’s card is TEMPTATION

July is a powerful month  –  it is both your wake-up call and your warning, and it will lead to further self-empowerment!

It’s time to identify what is holding you back and keeping you trapped. It’s a month for honestly identifying and owning any addictions, self-destructive or self-sabotaging behaviours and damaging relationships (with people, beliefs or situations). July also gifts you the clarity, energy and courage to end those things that do not serve your Highest  Good.

Where are you being pulled off your path?  Where are you failing to walk your truth or to put yourself, your values and your important projects or calling first?

Don’t be a slave to debt, to abusive relationships of any kind, or to situations where you are not valued.  This is a month that calls you to free yourself from those chains. Look to where you feel or are indeed trapped –  then work out what to do about it.

July shows you that there is no need to go for the quick fix or to chase after every bright shiny new promise.  All you ever need is the simplicity of well-considered goals that you care about and find engaging and satisfying.

Don’t be swayed by the lure of materialism either. At the end of your life what will have counted most are experiences, relationships, accomplishments, shared moments and moments where you have glimpsed the face of God – whatever you perceive that energy to be.

This is a month to overcome fear and doubt, a month to become stronger in yourself and your life direction, a month to remind yourself about what truly matters.

Best crystals this month? – Amazonite and Mookaite

Amazonite helps you to live bravely and from your heart. It will boost self-confidence and self-worth.

Mookaite is a gently shielding stone that helps you to think clearly and to break patterns of self-criticism and negative thinking. It aids in looking for positive solutions to life’s dilemmas and embracing change.

Essential oils to support your journey?

I’m loving Ylang Ylang essential oil for July. It’s one of the main ingredients in the perfume Chanel No. 5 and it’s famed the world over for its luxurious uplifting floral fragrance. Ylang Ylang isn’t just a pretty scent though. It has proven ability to promote relaxation and positive emotions so it’s a great addition to your emotional wellbeing toolkit.

Try massaging a drop or two into the back of your neck to soothe you when you’re frazzled, or put a few drops into an Epsom Salts bath for deep relaxation.

If you’d like to diffuse it, try these blends:

  • 3 drops of Ylang Ylang, 2 drops of Bergamot and 1 drop of Vetiver for a blend that is grounding and uplifting and sure to shift you into a positive headspace and support taxed adrenals
  • 3 drops of Ylang Ylang, 2 drops of Geranium and 2 drops of Lavender for a sublimely relaxing and nurturing blend (this one’s good in the bath too!)
  • 2 drops of Ylang Ylang, 2 drops of Jasmine, 2 drops of Sandalwood and 1 drop of Frankincense to promote deep meditation and heightened intuition

I’m passionate about essential oils and their capacity to support our wellness journey and our spiritual and emotional wellbeing. If you’d like to know more or want to source the oils I recommend and trust visit this site or contact me at channelnc@gmail.com
