The Big Sky Above Me, and my Aboriginal Aunties in my Heart

“There is one spectacle grander than the sea, that is the sky; there is one spectacle grander than the sky, that is the interior of the soul.”

~ Victor Hugo

Hello, Lovelies.

I’m in Arizona right now. This morning I left my hotel room and went for a long walk in the early morning sunlight. It’s winter here, and the air was crisp, but lit with sunshine. Yoga pants and a singlet top were fine once I got moving. As long as I was moving and in the sun I was warm.

The further I walked from my hotel the more I was struck by the similarities between the Kimberley in Australia’s Outback, and the desert here.

In both places there are big skies. Skies so big that they stretch right down to the ground around your feet, so it feels as if you are walking on the rim of the earth somehow.

There’s a feeling of ancient energy and a sense of sacred.

I’m sure it’s no co-incidence that I was reading the latest and almost final draft of my Kimberly memoir before I got on the plane to come here.

As I walked alone this morning with only the sky and some birds for company, I was suddenly struck by something my Aboriginal Auntie told me, many years ago. She’d said, “You got the stories in you. Plenny stories. Old stories. Dat’s your magic. Story Magic!”.

I’d never really understood what she meant, and I had never been able to get her to explain.

Months later Auntie welcomed me to her Country with a smoke ceremony and performed some rituals with me to sing my Story into me. Then she whispered in my ear, “Now you got your Story, your Spirit no longer lost. Dat Dreaming inside you make you understand who you are. Dat Story how you gonna walk dis world.”

It made me think about the vision I’d had of walking behind a horse in Arizona (see yesterday’s blog for details) and of other dreams, visions and insights I have had – about lives before mine, back in the past, before our modern-day world.

Old stories. Other people’s stories. Or my own stories, from another time.

I’m not sure what it all means yet, but I believe that one of the reasons I have come to Sedona is to find out.

What a curious and surprising year 2020 is turning out to be.

Love from beneath vast blue skies filled with clean sunshiney air, Nicole xx
