Dear Discouraged Lightworker, Failed Healer, Broken Creative… A Letter of Encouragement

“Patience is the calm acceptance that things can happen in a different order than the one you have in mind.”
~ David G. Allen

The year is young, and still fresh with the scent of hope and possibility.

Despite this, or perhaps because of it, my inbox is filled with the sad, agonised and even defeated messages of those who have laboured long towards their dream and who have never been able to achieve it. These are dreams they also can’t walk away from. Inside them is a vision – an idea that calls them to action. An idea that has transfixed them, and which holds some kind of mystical spell over them so that they are unable to give up the vision and move to something else. (Please note – I am talking about callings here, not love affairs!)

Writers who write one genre to mixed success while holding a story in their heart that they are sure is unmarketable and that could destroy an otherwise adequate career. Healers who have been beset by all manner of health problems themselves. Coaches and counsellors whose own lives have been messy or impossible. Lightworkers whose relationships or finances or personal circumstances are in tatters. People needing to work day jobs which suck the life out of them and leave them with no time or energy to go work on their own project.

All of which has prevented them from realising the dream in their heart.

People working with my Year of ME Planner who are trying to define their One Big Thing for the year (or perhaps for their lives) have contacted me, not because they can’t work out what the One Big Thing might be, but because they are fearful that they won’t be able to deliver on the promise. They’ve already decided long ago. The vision is there. But so is this history of failure, limited success, or inability to even properly start.

So I wanted to write you this letter of encouragement, and ask you, please, not to give up!

I have been where you are. Yes, I have. And I speak from my heart to yours, hoping that you will truly hear me.
You see, you’ve been let down so many times. You’ve had this vision. You’ve had this One Big Thing dream for so long. And at the same time you haven’t done it. Life got in the way. Illness got in the way. Lack of money and support and being in survival mode with no energy to devote to your dream got in the way. Body not working got in the way. Brain not working got in the way. People who really needed you, or who took everything you had got in the way. Yet the dream remained.

Once, in your long-ago lives, you were someone who GOT THINGS DONE. Who overcame obstacles and met deadlines and was reliable. In that life it seemed entirely feasible that you could easily and passionately get your One Big Thing done. Then little by little it all fell away, and on your good days you’d make plans, only to have them dashed as the next day came and you couldn’t keep up with the things you’d organised for yourself. Feelings of failure crept in. You began not to trust yourself. You began not to trust the Universe.

Why would you be given a dream that burned such a blaze inside you, only to be cruelly thwarted and left unfulfilled, with the dream out in front of you as a reminder of all of that failure. Right?
I get it. I’ve lived it.

And I have a new paradigm for you. But it requires a BIG shift of your current thinking.

You see, what if it’s actually not a failure? What if it’s about timing?

What if it’s about truly KNOWING struggle, so that you can speak to that energy in others (as I am speaking to that energy within you right now, having also lived it).

What if the world wasn’t ready for what you had to share if you’d delivered any earlier?

What if it just wasn’t your time before now?

So many people like you and me have been held back in our progress because it wasn’t our time to peak in the old energies. We’re part of the pointy end of change and healing and expansion in this new post-2012 energetic era.

What if it all happened because your soul and the Universe contrived all manner of stuff to get you into a space of right timing for the sharing of your talents and gifts?

Let go of blame and shame and concepts of loss and punishment. That’s so old energy – and you, my lovelies, are here to work with the NEW. You’re healing. Things are changing. Now is your time. Start small. Expect delays as you regroup and regather and open to new ideas and energies. Open your arms to it all and trust. Know that you will still make forward progress. Know that your One BIg Thing may come to look completely different to the picture you have held in your head. Know that this is okay. You are here in response to the new energies, and these new energies are co-creative. Get it? You don’t have to do it all on your own. You don’t need to be in struggle and isolation anymore, and it WILL get easier. It is already getting easier.

Make peace with yourself and the Universe and your One Big Thing. It’s not too late. In fact, the timing is just right. Take a nap. Find some gratitude for good stuff to level up your vibration. Start bravely or not bravely in one little corner and trust in miracles and magic and synchronicity and amazing happenings BECAUSE THAT IS THE WORLD WE LIVE IN NOW. Not the echoes of the old world that are bouncing around in your head, causing you so much pain.

You’ve got this. We’re here for you. We love you. You were born for this. Onwards, one limpy little step, nap and cup of tea at a time. Soon enough you’ll be flying. I know it!

Much love, Nicole xoxo

“All things entail rising and falling timing. You must be able to discern this.

Sometimes things don’t go to plan.

We’ve had a lot of rain here at the farm. Lots actually. Think floods.

Last Saturday, after having been flooded in overnight, the causeway dropped and Ben decided we’d make a run for it and head to the city for a few days. I didn’t want to go. I have a workshop coming up. And other deadlines to meet. I had so much work to do, and sitting at home in the rain working on my computer in front of the fire sounded like bliss to me. Also, to be completely honest, I felt like crap. Spending a few days in my pyjamas, holed up while it bucketed down outside, sounded fine by me.

rain

There was only one problem. Stupid amounts of rain were predicted and I was worried about running out of Lyme drugs, and accessing a post office to send off my memoir to a competition that was about to close.

We needed to make a decision.

So we hastily threw a few things in bags and jumped in the car with the dogs in tow. A couple of hours later there was more heavy rain, the causeway came back up, but we were now safely on the other side. Our plan was to fill my prescriptions, finish my memoir changes and get them in the post, and come back late Sunday or early Monday morning.

In Brisbane my computer died an hour after I plugged it in. You know, the horrible blue screen of death? That one.

windows-blue-screen-of-death-pfn_list_corrupt

Meanwhile the rain kept coming down.

I couldn’t make the computer behave!

Suddenly our quick trip looked like needing an extension.

As a result this week has not turned out to look anything like I had planned.

But…

On Sunday when I realised that I would need to buy a new computer, the one I wanted was on special – for that day only. (Which also once again validates my personal mantra Everything I want is always on special! Read more about helpful affirmations here: My Embarrassing Affirmation Confession)

Our good friend Tony, who also happens to be a computer wizard, suddenly had a work cancellation which meant he could perform CPR on my old laptop and breathe life into my new one. A process I thought should take an hour or two, but which actually took days. Who knew these things could be so complicated?

While I was in that Universe-imposed twilight zone of no emails, blogs, twitter, skype, facebook or any other form of digital communication I was able to re-read and re-edit my memoir the old-fashioned way, with pencil and paper. I finished my draft, made the changes on a borrowed computer, printed it off and sent it on its way. I’m sure I did a much better job of it with so few distractions.

What to do after that? Computer still not working, and new Lyme drugs making me feel less than one hundred percent. I napped my way through most of the next few days.

Result?

My memoir is done, I am well rested and feeling sooooo much better, and my new computer, finally, is ready for business.

Of course, the farm is still flooded in. We might get home tomorrow. Or we might not. Helpful neighbours phone us a few times a day with weather updates. No point going home if we get all the way there only to find that we can’t get over the flooded creek that leads to our front door. We’ve had almost a year’s worth of rain in the past few days, and it’s still raining! We’re safe here in the city, our cows are safe back at the farm, and there’s nothing else to be done.

I’m okay with whatever happens. This week has worked out just fine, with no help from me.

Life’s like that, isn’t it? You can plan all you want, but often the Universe has a way of making your plans ridiculously irrelevant and replacing them with something far more magical and synchronous.

Are you holding on too tight right now? Maybe it’s time to let the Universe have a little elbow room.

Much love to you, Nicole xx

Inviting Help into Your Life

Showing the way

“I do believe in an everyday sort of magic — the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we’re alone.”
~ Charles de Lint

Divine Guidance.  Signs. Help.  Answers to prayers.  Last-minute reprieves. Dramatic turn-arounds. Miracles. Most of us have asked for them at one time or another, but are we actually heard?  Can we really reach out like that and expect things to change?

I believe that the answer is yes. But it is useful to understand the process.  Our job is not only to ask. (I’ve written about that process here: Asking for a Sign) Our job is also to be receptive to answers, no matter what they look like, or how they come to us. Our job is to ACT on those answers and synchronicities. Our job is to know that we need to trust in Divine Timing. Especially when what’s happening in our lives is not going to OUR timing – the timing we want for ourselves and our plans and dreams.

Let me explain…

Back in November 2012,I stood on a moonlit beach in Thailand thinking of a particular set of circumstances in my life. My beloved Nana had just died, and I would not make it home for her funeral. And earlier that day, when I still suffered from congestive heart failure, I’d been crippled with severe chest pain. The pain had gone, but it had left me frightened and bemused. Once again I’d hit a wall with my health, and no matter what I’d tried (and the list was exhaustive) nothing was working. I realised I had reached my limit. No matter what I did, I was dragging myself through life, not enjoying it at all, but trying my best. For my husband. For my friends. For my clients. Every day was a struggle. And every day I was getting worse. Again.

I missed my Nana. I felt like more of my cheer squad was now in heaven than down here on earth.

My deteriorating health was impacting my marriage, my work, my very ability to draw breath. I knew in my heart I couldn’t go on like this. I didn’t have it in me any more. I’d found the end of the line. I stood there on that beach, oblivious to the beauty, with tears streaming down my face and I said, “Do you know what, God? I just can’t do this anymore. I’m done.”

I was ready to go home.

I meant it.  I said what was in my heart.  There was no neediness. No wanting or hoping. So it wasn’t really a prayer, or even a request for help.  I just said it how it was.  A definitive statement without expectation. I was squared away with dying. In fact, I fully expected that death was where I was heading. I was okay with that, sad as I would be to leave my husband. I was so very tired. I had no fight left in the tank. I really was done. I turned on my heel, went back to our room, and then forgot all about this seemingly one-sided conversation in the days ahead.

Less than a week later, I bumped into a friend in Bangkok who told me that she’d been having thyroid problems.  She mentioned that it could sometimes cause chest pain.

We talked some more…

Oh, she said. You need desiccated pig thyroid, not that other stuff you’re on. There aren’t too many doctors back in Australia who prescribe it, but there’s one in Brisbane. And she gave me his name.

A few days later I was back in Brisbane, and I called that number. By some miracle I ended up with an immediate appointment with a doctor who usually took a year to see. In fact, I’d tried to see him three times during the past ten years and been unable to get an appointment at all. But he was in his office, it was a Friday afternoon, his secretary had gone home with the flu, and he’d just had his last appointment of the day cancel. Could I come in straight away?

I could, and I did.

Before I saw him I had to fill in a very long and exacting health history. Standard procedure for doctors who think outside the square.

I wrote it all down. All thirty years of it. Something I hadn’t bothered to do for a long time.

He called my name and I went into his office.

I looked around at the pictures and the box of toys on the floor while he read my history. It took a very long time.

Finally, he looked up.

“This is textbook Lyme Disease,” he said. “Ever been tested for it?”

I’d never even heard of it.

He gave me forms so I could send off some blood samples, and that was the day I began to get my life back.

He was right. I did have Lyme Disease. I told my sister. She stumbled upon some information concerning another doctor who was about to open a new clinic, specifically treating this illness. I was one of the first patients to be seen.

These two physicians changed the course of my trajectory forever.

Now I am healing.

One day I fully expect to be well, whatever that may look like.

Why am I telling you this?

Because I know that somewhere, right now, someone is reading this who needs to know that they are not alone. That our thoughts and prayers are heard. That answers sometimes come from left field, and in manners that we could never have imagined.

Sometimes we need to ask for help. Sometimes we need to surrender.

And it usually doesn’t happen in the timing we’d hoped for.

But…

…wherever you are at, know that miracles are possible.

Change is possible.

Help is possible.

Healing is possible.

And you are worthy of all these things.

Sending you much love, and holding a candle for you in my heart, Nicole xx

Today, choose Kindness…

“Be kind whenever possible.  It is always possible.”

“When we feel love and kindness towards others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace.”

~ Both quotes from The Dalai Lama

Just for today, choose kindness.

Choose to smile from your heart.

Hold back any harsh thoughts, words or criticisms, and find a way to be gentle in your dealings with self and others.

Let kindness be both your journey and your destination.

Just for today, choose kindness.

Let kindness colour the way you see the world.

Put away judgement, and seek out things that can swell your heart with gratitude.

Look for the good in people, the beauty in your surroundings, the blessings at your feet.

Appreciate the simple things, and if you can, share those simple things with others.

Tea for Two by Rosemary Valadon www.rosemaryvaladon.com

A caring word, a gentle touch, a nod of support – none of these things will cost you a penny, but to someone they might be priceless gifts.

When we choose kindness, we ease the way for ourselves and others.  We become an agent for flow and abundance.  Our attitude affirms the goodness and connection inherent in this experience we call life.

We may become an Earthly Angel for someone for whom the Universe intends support or encouragement. God and good can only work THROUGH us. Why not be an agent for that good? Why not be choose to be part of a deliberate energy of love and positivity?

Whatever we choose to think and believe, whatever actions we offer up to the world, our energies come back to us, multiplied.

The kindness we offer today will find its way back to us when we most need it.

Image from dailyvibrations.blogspot.com

And through the act of living from our hearts, we are transformed, becoming magnetic to even more good-will and positive energy.

Just for today, choose kindness.

Let the energy of love transform your life.  Let the energy of love transform our world.

Just for today, choose kindness.

Today, in someone’s darkness, you can be the Light. ♥

Patience and Right Timing

The two most powerful warriors are patience and time.

~ Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy

If you read yesterday’s post, you’ll know that I am a big fan of trusting in two things: Universal Wisdom and Right Timing.

You might wonder what that has to do with patience? Everything, my friends, everything!

Why? Well, when we are asking for a sign, when we’re newly on our path, when we’re in the early stages of love, a new diet, a fledgling business or a fresh story idea we are usually good with waiting, and things unfolding in a gradual or haphazard manner. We most often have a sense of support too, and that loved-up and cosy feeling of being listened to by the Universe, God, our Guides, Angels or whomever else we feel is out there for us.

But what happens when the newness wears off?

This is usually where we start to falter.

When things are new, or the search hasn’t even really begun yet, we run on excitement, hope, anticipation and adrenalin.

But when we are well into things, or what we want hasn’t shown up yet, or we’re staring up at the bigness of the project we have just undertaken, we can wonder if we are EVER going to achieve the thing we desire. We become impatient.

Doubt creeps in. Fear too. And once you’ve cracked the door open to doubt and fear, all those lousy opportunistic emotions and limiting beliefs from our past start tapping us on the shoulder: defeat, failure, not good enough, not smart enough, not pretty enough, not worthy enough, too old, too fat, too late…

All things take time.  And I have seen too many people walk away from the thing that was actually working, just because it wasn’t unfolding within the time-frame they’d set for it.

Oh, we say to ourselves.  Love is NEVER coming.

Oh, this business is NEVER going to make money.

I’ll NEVER get this book published.

Or whatever other sad story you tell yourself…

And so you stop what you’re doing.  You give up.  You go home.

But what makes you so wise that you can suddenly know the workings of the Universe?

What makes you think that you can have a plan better than Divine Timing?

It’s a bit like being three months pregnant and ready to have that baby RIGHT NOW, because the nursery is painted, the freezer is full of casseroles and you have a few weeks leave up your sleeve.  Come on, baby, you think.  I’m ready!  Let’s do it!!! Only problem is, babies take longer to make than three months.

If I have any advice for you, it’s this:

❤ Relax and enjoy the journey! When we are patient, we perfect our craft.  We grow, and learn and develop all manner of new talents and insights. We gain mastery. It’s never just about the destination – and it’s always about the becoming…

❤ Trust that Universal Wisdom has a much better plan than anything you could come up with on your own, and all you need to do is keep putting one foot in front of the other, living with an open heart and an open mind.

❤ Know that things have a wonderful way of working out with Right Timing. And that timing is usually not YOUR timing.  If it hasn’t shown up yet, if it’s taking too long, there’s a reason for that. You just can’t see that from where you’re standing, and you might be closer than you think.

You ARE supported and well-loved, and there IS a magic and a wisdom to the way things unfold for us.

Your job is to be happy, to follow your heart, to live with gratitude and compassion and to be open to opportunities and miracles. You’re not in this alone, so stop acting like it and start trusting! ❤

I’ve recorded a simple Guided Meditation to help you relax into the energy of patience and trust.  All you need to do is click on the link below, and then close your eyes and listen…

You are a well-loved child of the Universe. You are supported and connected to source energy.  All is well.

Please excuse me…

Some of you might have read recently about my use of affirmations (My embarrassing affirmation confession), so you’ll know that one of my favourites is ‘Something wonderful will happen to me today…’

So that was exactly what I was affirming to myself this morning, from the comfort of my nice warm bed, around 4 am, when my phone announced that I had a message.

A friend from overseas had just landed at Brisbane Airport, and had  a few hours stopover before flying on to Sydney.  I was awake, the airport was close, so I jumped at the chance for a hug, a chat, and an early breakfast.

Something wonderful happened to me today.  Life’s crazy synchronicity enabled me to catch  up with someone I love.  Two people, right place, right time and an ability to say ‘yes’ to opportunity.

I’ll blog the thing I was going to blog tomorrow… But today I have given myself some time out.  And hey – I blogged this from my iPhone.  How awesome is that!!!
