Are You Listening To Your Inner Niggles?

This is a week for standing up for yourself, for speaking your truth, for seeking fairness and justice for yourself.

So, this week I’m asking you to pay attention to your niggles.

You know, niggles. Those funny little feelings where something doesn’t sit right with you. Maybe it’s the way your partner talks to their mother, or about their previous girlfriend. Maybe it’s the way your boss puts you down and then laughs it off or praises you so that you’re unsure if you’re overreacting. Maybe it’s the way you think your friend is lying to you because their stories so often contradict each other. Or you haven’t heard back from someone who seemed so keen to catch up. Or something isn’t adding up about a situation or relationship and it is bothering you, even though you can talk yourself out of those feelings.

Niggles.

Niggles are our intuition raising a red flag for us. They show us where to be more aware, where to tread carefully, where to pay better attention.

This week already I’ve had a flood of emails to my inbox from people who are deep into relationships or situations that gave them plenty of niggles, but where they ignored them. Now things are really going wrong. Or they’re being treated less and less well. But there are high stakes now. Marriages, business partnerships, money involved, or children. Nothing has really changed from those first niggles, except that the person can finally name the issues that the niggles were warning them about.

Niggles exist to show you where a situation is in misalignment with your values, wellbeing and highest good.

If you’ve ignored those niggles up to now it’s not too late. This week you’re empowered to act in support of yourself.

If you have niggles tune in. Pay attention. Maybe it’s time to step back, reassess, get help or move in a new direction.

Life is too short to settle for second best.

Have you seen the bumper sticker that says ‘We are all Spiritual Beings having a Human Experience’? If you’re reading this, chances are that you are awakening to your own Spiritual Self. I remember when I first began to be aware of my own Spirituality. It was an exciting and difficult time in my life. It was also confusing, because I had little direction and did not know where to begin.

We are spiritual BEings, and when we begin to understand this and to discover and honour this connection to Soul and to Source, miracles begin to happen. There are many ways to nurture our Soul and to develop our Spiritual and Psychic gifts.

We don’t become Spiritual, because we already are. Acknowledging our spiritual aspect is actually just a step towards balance and wholeness in our lives. But how do we do this?

If you want to get fit and healthy, you change your lifestyle and start to exercise. As your body becomes accustomed to these changes it responds by being able to do more, by replacing fat with muscle and by energising you. There’s not much difference with developing spiritual “fitness”. It involves lifestyle choices and committing to exercises that help you to find and strengthen your spiritual and psychic self. Here are some to get you started:

  1. Wake up happy.  If you are not happy keep working on feeling good.  Don’t get out of bed until you are in a better head-space!!!  Stretch in bed, feel good, and surround yourself with white light, drawing it deep into your body. Then seal your aura with a layer of colour, like putting a shell around an egg. Choose the colour you are most drawn to, and know that this will have a benefit for you.
  2. Meditate – meditation is the act of mindful awareness, and it can take many forms.  Here is a simple meditation to try: https://youtu.be/F6eFFCi12v8
  3. Time in nature – Stand with your bare feet on the ground, and feel the energy of the Earth anchoring and grounding your body. Feel the sun, sky or moon and stars above you, radiating cosmic energy that enters from the top of your head.  Sit leaning against a tree and feel its wise energy nurture you. Watch birds or animals and seek wisdom and messages from them.
  4. Journal – Daily writing helps to create a space for self-knowledge, healing and contemplation. More tips on that here.
  5. Daily card or rune – Choose some runes or a deck of spiritual or inspirational oracle or tarot cards. Each day close your eyes, offer up a prayer for guidance and then choose one card and let its wisdom enrich your understanding by giving you new perspectives.
  6. Eat to lift your vibration – The fresher the food, the higher its vibration.  Favour organic, seasonal, minimally processed and cruelty-free.  Drink lots of water too! 
  7. Get plenty of rest – When we are rested we are calmer and more able to hear our inner wisdom.
  8. Say no to drugs, and limit consumption of alcohol, caffeine, sugar and any form of chemical additive.Things that alter your consciousness or hype you up also disconnect you from clarity, reality, soul wisdom and Spirit.
  9.  Be discerning about your choice of sexual partners. Sexual intimacy opens up the energy fields of the parties involved, and there is great transference of energy between you. People who lead a lifestyle of lack of regard for their physical and emotional well-being, who take drugs, consume lots of alcohol, and indulge in promiscuity, negative and violent thinking will have unbalanced energy, or worse. When you have sex you open yourself up to all of this. Is this what you want to knowingly expose yourself, your home and loved ones to?
  10. Call on God, your Ancestors, Angels and Guides. None of us is ever alone. There is love and wisdom all around us, and all we ever have to do is ask, and then stay open to that guidance.  
  11. Trust your intuition – it’s like a muscle, the more you use it the stronger it gets!
  12. Live in the moment – Here is where your power is. Not in the past. Not in the future. Be present in the here and now.
  13. Be brave – love deeply.
  14. Ask for teachers to come into your life – this might be in the form of books, friends, workshops, mentors.  Go with what you are drawn to and discard the rest.
  15. Love and accept yourself as you are NOW!

Understanding Intuition and Gut Instinct

There is an unseen force that lives within each of us, and that connects us all.  We are energetic by nature, and that energy can guide us if only we can tune in to it.  One of the simplest ways to do this is by learning to honour our intuition.

There are many ways to do this, but today I’m going to focus on one: gut feeling.  Gut instinct or feeling is a primal response hard-wired into every human.

Gut feeling really does come from that area of your body – your abdomen.  It’s not a mind-based wisdom.  It doesn’t come from your heart.  It comes from that primal genetic material that is encoded and passed from parent to offspring.  In humans that is your original eight cells, which are located near your solar plexus. It is also the wisdom of the many bacteria and other organisms that live within the gut itself. We are not just our own consciousness. We are a whole co-creative biosystem that has evolved with an instinct to keep ourselves safe and to guard against threat.

So how do we tune in to this?  It’s easier than you think. Gut instinct does not use words or images.  Gut instinct uses emotions, and rockets along our central nervous system, which can also produce physical reactions.  It operates in 3 modes – neutral, forward and reverse. Some people call this the ‘sixth sense’. Some call it ‘intuition’.  Whatever the name, I’m sure you’ve all felt it and are familiar with it, whether you honour it or not.

In ‘forward’, we literally feel that we want to move closer to something.  We feel good about it.  We feel excited, happy and positive.  We can’t explain why, we can’t find the words for it, but we KNOW that something will work, that the person is good or honest, that this situation will be for the best, that this job/car/person/product/idea/food is the right choice.

In ‘neutral’ we feel indifference. There is no strong emotion or physical reaction either way.

In ‘reverse’ our gut is telling us to back away.  We feel unsure or uncomfortable.  The warning bells go off.  If it’s a mild response, this is where our brain often kicks in and invalidates our emotion (that can happen in ‘forward’ situations too!) by persuading our logical mind with rational thoughts and justifications.  In a strong response we may feel anxious or ill, we want to move back from this job/person/situation, we want to get to safety or a neutral space.  We can’t say why but we KNOW this won’t work well, this person can’t be trusted, something is wrong, it’s going to end badly…

This basic instinct is like a muscle – the more we use it, the stronger it becomes.  If we learn to trust it with the smaller things, eventually we’ll be able to hear and honour it with the bigger things.  This can be especially hard for people who are governed by their mind, which is why I recommend starting with small things that have no big ramifications in your life.

Here are some examples you may be familiar with:

  • Driving to work you suddenly feel like taking an alternative route.  You ignore that instinct and a minute past the turn-off you get stuck in a gridlock that makes you late. If you’d gone the other way you would have missed the traffic snarl.
  • In the supermarket you are drawn to a special: roasted chicken and a vast tub of coleslaw.  You really want to buy it, but that’s crazy.  There’s only you and that’s so much food.  You don’t buy it, and when you get home your sister and her family have arrived and that chicken and coleslaw would have been perfect…
  • You meet a guy, and your immediate reaction is one of dislike and distrust.  Everyone tells you how great he is, so you brush that initial feeling away.  Down the track your instinct is proved right when he turns out to be not-so-nice or trustworthy after all.  You kick yourself because you KNEW it all along!
If you’re a Star Wars fan you’ll know that Master Yoda, the great Jedi has much to say about the Force.  Here’s some of what he told Luke Skywalker…

“My ally is the Force. And a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us… and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this… [nudging Luke’s arm] crude matter! You must feel the Force around you. Here, between you, me, the tree, the rock… everywhere! Even between the land and the ship.”

If Luke learns to master the Force, as other Jedi have done, the Force can provide access to even higher levels of awareness and intuition.  Yoda explains, “Through the Force, things you will see. Other places. The future…the past…old friends long gone.”

Animals don’t question that Force.  And because of that they are guided in incredible ways.  They trust their instincts. This youtube clip illustrates that energy and trust.  It’s magical…

Postscript: I’m a channel, and often that connection informs my writing. It means I sometimes write about things I don’t consciously understand or remember, which I then go and google (welcome to my life!) to find out their meaning.  That’s how I found out about the eight cells.

Strengthening Intuition Week 8 – Honouring our Early Warning System

In this last instalment of our Strengthening Intuition Series we’re looking at how to tune in to and respect our very own Early Warning System. Let’s start by defining exactly what an Early Warning System is:

2. A system or procedure designed to warn of a potential or an impending problem.

A few years ago I was on a long drive through Outback Australia, and an interview came on the radio. The man being interviewed was a forensic psychologist and profiler, who helped identify and track down serial killers. What fascinated me most about the interview was his accounts of people who had encountered these murderers and lived to tell the tale.

Broadly, the people fell into two categories – those who had not been attacked, and those who had been attacked and had then survived. By studying the two groups, and their responses to the serial killers’ behaviour, the forensic psychologist made a compelling case for the Early Warning System – that inner guidance – that resides within each of us.

The group who had not been attacked?  In each case ‘something’ had made each person feel uneasy after engaging in some form of interaction with the killer. In honouring that sense of uneasiness they had moved on; terminating conversations, stepping away, in some cases even being aggressively ill-mannered to the serial killer due to their inner driver telling them to exert caution.

The group who were attacked but survived? Interestingly, each of them had experienced that same sense of uneasiness, which was then brushed away  or reasoned away, often because of a fear of appearing ‘rude’, or their ingrained training to give the other person (the serial killer) the benefit of the doubt. This group of survivors was very small, and only one person had managed to escape from their attacker.  The others had been saved because their attacker had been disturbed.

What really stayed with me from this interview was that the survivors had experienced not just one example of uneasiness but an escalating series of red flags, warning them of danger, which they had continued to ignore.

Ignoring those simple signals cost many people their lives…

We all have an inbuilt Early Warning System.  It is constantly feeding us information.  But so often, we over-ride the signals with our intellect, or our sense of propriety and worry about offending others – even strangers.

How do we learn to get back in touch with these signals?

All of the exercises that we have practiced over the last seven weeks have helped us to begin paying attention to input that comes from beyond our conscious mind.

There are further steps we can take to refine our ability to listen to our inner Guidance:

  1. Stay in the moment.  When we live inside our head, in the past, or the future, we are no longer connected to what is going on around us right now.  When we are not in the moment, we miss vital signals that can guide us safely through life. Throughout the day, stop, breathe, connect back into your centre, and pay attention to your feelings and intuition.
  2. Still your mind.  Meditation is useful for this, but even a few minutes of quiet sitting or walking will do. Focus only on your breath, and on stillness.  Stay open.
  3. Learn how to centre yourself.  I’ve covered this technique in a previous blog, and it’s a simple way to tune in and operate from a place of balance and awareness.
  4. Honour your feelings and energetic impressions above all.  We are a well-mannered society, and most of us have been taught to value the happiness and good impression others form of us above our own comfort. Manners are important, but being nice is not always in our best interests, and can actually cause us harm.
  5. When your intuition tells you to back away, pay attention. Our gut feeling gives us only three directions: move towards something, a neutral position, or move away. Anything that gives you that sense of unease is worth paying attention to.  Don’t try and rationalise it away. That red flag is there for a reason.

During the Asian Tsunami of 2004, there were many reports of animals and tribal villagers moving out of the path of danger before the tsunami struck.  Scientists have since discovered that there is a part of our brain called the anterior cingulate cortex that is actively engaged in helping guide us when faced with impending hazards of which we may not yet be consciously aware.

Nature has gifted all of us with a strong guidance system.  Our job is to learn to pay attention to that guidance.  It only takes a little practice, and the willingness to value yourself as much as you value the wellbeing and good opinion of others.

Intuition – that’s what I want to talk about today.

We all have it – intuition is a glorious part of our human condition.  Problem is, most of us don’t know how to use it.

Today I’m going to take myself right back to the beginning. I’ll share with you some of the stronger intuitive moments I had before I began to really work with my psychic abilities.  I hope that by sharing them, you’ll be better able to recognise these moments in your own lives.  These aren’t fancy or sophisticated.  These are raw moments that led me to a different decision, understanding or action than if I’d just been coming from my head.

Intuition and gut instinct communicate with us in so many ways. You might get a flash of strong emotion, an image or a movie in your head, a feeling in your body, a sense of deja vu.  You might have an incredibly vivid dream, or a waking dream. Or, you might just know

Some of them weren’t about positive things:

In primary school I woke up in the middle of the night because something was wrong.  I could smell smoke, and I felt very anxious. I padded through the house in my pyjamas, but everyone was asleep and everything was as it should be. I climbed back into bed and all I could think about was a girl I knew at school. I wondered if she was angry with me.  The next morning I found out that her house had burned down in the middle of the night.  They were all okay. And their house was too far away from mine for me to have heard a siren or to have smelled anything.  They lost everything.

Early in high school, I had a creepy feeling about a family friend. While everyone else liked him, he made me incredibly uneasy. To me his eyes looked ‘too bright’ – like a bird’s eyes’s somehow, always watching, and watching too intensely. Although I couldn’t explain it, I felt very unsafe around him, and I felt that he was full of secrets. Nothing could convince me that he was a nice guy. I could ‘feel’ a wrongness about him somehow.  One day when I was left at home alone with him (he was working as a tradesman and I was home sick from school) he tried to sexually assault me. Mum came home unexpectedly, and I made sure after that to never be around him alone.  Years later, he went to prison – convicted of serial pedophelia and child pornography crimes, mostly against very young boys.

During a university break, a friend asked me to travel north to pick up a car she had just purchased.  We would drive it home together, stopping at beaches and interesting places along the way. Initially I said yes. It sounded like fun. But then everything seemed to conspire against me. I couldn’t get time off from work, I got food poisoning, one of my grandparents went to hospital. Nothing was working in my favour. I ended up saying no, but instead of feeling bad, I was flooded with this strange sense of relief. About two days after she left for her journey I got this metallic taste in my mouth, and I could smell something like hot brakes on a car.  Then I had a tumbling sensation, like being on one of those wild rides at a sideshow.  It came and went for about a week, and I found it distressing, but I had no idea what it was all about. Then it just stopped.  A few days later my friend’s parents called to me she had rolled her car on a dirt road heading down  a hill to a remote beach, and been badly injured. She spent months in hospital.

Some of my intuitive experiences have also been about very positive things:

At primary school I sat an examination to win a scholarship to one of Brisbane’s private high schools. Part of the examination required us to write creatively using one of a range of sentences as a starter. The words poured out of me and I just knew they were good. Although I felt unsure about my performance with the rest of the long examination, I was sure about that essay.  I knew it would win me a scholarship.  I felt a great certainty. The day that the letter came, I also knew. I just knew something really good was about to happen.  I felt light and happy all day.  When I came home mum had bought a cake and my grandparents had bought me a posy of flowers. My letter of offer was propped up on the kitchen table beside them. I’d won.

One day I was invited to a costume party.  I had no costume, and no idea where to get one from. I had to drive across town to meet a friend, and for some reason I decided not to take the freeway.  As I drove through a particular suburb, I decided for some inexplicable reason to turn right off the main road.  There in front of me was a massive costume hire place. I felt so very clever! And I found an awesome pirate outfit…

Many of you will already know this story, and it has happened long after I began working with my psychic gifts.  But it shows you how my intuition is still guiding me, even when my mind is somewhere else.  I was shopping, late one scorchingly hot summer afternoon, and I heard a sound like a peeping chicken in the shopping centre carpark. I couldn’t ignore it.  I was compelled to go and investigate, although I needed to get home because I had plans I’d been looking forward to all day. Something made me get out of the car, and go looking for the chicken. Of course it wasn’t a chicken – instead I found a tiny puppy, almost dead from heat and dehydration. I brought him home, and took him to the vet, who didn’t hold out much hope that he would survive the night. He proved everyone wrong, and Bert is now a wonderful member of our family.

All you ever have to do with your intuition is listen, and go with what you are feeling or being shown. The more you use it, the easier it gets.  We are all intuitive.  That is our birthright. And like me, sometimes in life, for no apparent reason, you’ll just know.
