Are you taking care of you?

Many of my friends are healers. They come from widely different schools and philosophies of healing – general medical practitioners, environmental medicine specialists, acupuncturists, naturopaths, herbalists, body workers, nutritionalists and all manner of other modalities. Over the past twenty years all of them have observed one thing; the number of people suffering long-term chronic illness, digestive issues, stress-related health issues and fatigue has soared. Not only that, many of the simple treatments that once worked so well for bringing people back into balance no longer are as effective.

Why?

There are many external factors – more exposure to pollutants and chemicals, little exercise, poorer diet, less sunshine.

But even when these things are addressed many people are slow to heal. I, and many of my learned practitioner friends, believe at least part of this is to do with the state of mind we are in.

There have been numerous studies done which show that when a person is relaxed the surface tension of their skin changes. Their blood pressure lowers, their heart slows, the chemicals responsible for sleep, blood sugar and hormonal balance rise and stabilise. In a place of relaxation people become more creative, more connected, happier, more adept at innovative thinking and problem solving. In a place of relaxation our bodies find it far easier to heal. It is impossible to think a negative thought when you are in a deeply relaxed state.

What does negative thinking have to do with my health?

Go ahead. Think of something that really makes you mad. Or powerless. Feel the changes take place in your body. You will feel heavier, there will be a sense of tension in your face and body. You may have a surge of adrenalin or a sudden draining away of energy. Your heart speeds up, you may feel clammy and hot, agitated or ill. This is not your imagination – this is your body’s autonomic response to your thoughts. This is a natural reaction to perceived stress within your body. Worry, stress, fear, panic, over-thinking; this is what is stopping you from healing.

Over time, this sort of thinking has a destructive impact on the body. It exhausts our adrenals. It puts pressure on our thyroid and other parts of our endocrine system. Our liver becomes stressed and congested and can’t function as well as it used to as it deals with the flood of naturally occurring chemicals WE have created in our body through the stress response.

In this place of adrenal depletion we can become addicted to caffeine, energy drinks, sugar and carbs to keep us functioning.

The blood is always in our extremities as we ready ourselves to fight or flee (the stress response once again) so our digestion slows and becomes impaired. Even if we gain weight we may still be massively malnourished, and our body may struggle to absorb supplements, herbs and better food.

We may resort to anti-depressants or sleeping pills. We may self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. Or we may just go through life exhausted, sick and not coping but needing to get up and get on with it each day.

Our sleep becomes affected, and that avenue of healing becomes further reduced. No matter who we see, or what we try nothing seems to work. Or it doesn’t work for long.

Sound familiar?

If you are living with stress and anxiety, if there is something or someone in your life, orfrom your past, that causes you to feel unsafe, inadequate, fearful, anxious, angry, resentful, or shamed… then it’s going to be an uphill battle to become well and stay well.

Positive emotions impact your health positively. Negative emotions impact your life negatively.

The longer a negative emotion is the ugly background wallpaper in your life, the more you get accustomed to it, but don’t be fooled. It will still be affecting you. And not in a good way.

Let me repeat an important point. It is impossible to experience a negative emotion when you are in a relaxed state.

What this means for your health is simple. When you are relaxed, your body can know healing. When you are relaxed your body can do what it needs to do to put itself back into balance, and to put you back into flow, connection and clarity.

So, by all means find yourself a skilled healer, a physician, or a team to put your body back together. But remember you also need to do your part. You need to take care of the housekeeping of your mind.

Do things that relax you. Practice meditation, yoga or tai chi. Listen to music. Go for walks in nature.Take the dog! Make time for YOU in your life. Do the things that give you peace. Find people, places and activities that nourish, validate and support you.

Let go of what no longer serves you in your life.

And if you need to, seek a counsellor, psychologist, psychiatrist – someone trained in helping you undo what has bound you up in knots.

I know this to be true: When your mind can know peace, your body can know healing – or at the very least an improvement in pain levels and quality of life.

Honour your body, work with your mind, and live from your heart. Your body has an infinite wisdom, and that wisdom is free to reign when we are in a place of relaxation and ease. Do all you can to find or create that peaceful place within you. Healing can then be a natural flow-on effect of that energy.

Hello, Lovelies!

Here we are staring down the final days of January, and the refreshing breeze that is February energy is already being felt. 2018 is a fabulous year for creativity, planning, learning and doing, but don’t forget to make time for some living too.


This year – above all else – is a year for fun, family, relationships, time out, creating things and enjoying yourself. Don’t let the year go by without making time for what matters. Let yourself live a little. Slow down. Smell the roses, or maybe even grow some of your own.

Holidays, Temples and Planning My Year!

I’m on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean right now. There has been far less possibility for internet connection that I had expected, so I’ve had all of this lovely quiet time to myself to plan, to dream and to begin calling my new year into reality.

Of course to do this I am using my Year of ME 2018 Planner. I’m so loving using this year’s edition. I have the A5 spiral-bound version and I’ve dedicated a little of each day to listening to the Channelling Recordings from my Guides at the Pop Up Event talking about the energies of 2018, and filling in the first pages, and thinking about my year ahead.  Both the recording and the Planner are available in our Store here on the blog .

The picture above is of my guiding card spread for myself for 2018. All the directions are in my Planner, so even if you have never worked with oracle or tarot cards as a reflection and self-discovery tool before you’ll find it easy to follow and do for yourself.

When we have ventured ashore I’ve been spending some time in the many wonderful Temples, Pagodas and Churches of Hong Kong, Vietnam and Taiwan, burning incense or lighting candles and offering my prayers for all of you. It has been a holiday full of fun, reflection, meditation, adventure and fabulous food!

Here’s one of the incense and prayer offerings I made for you. I wish it was smell-a-vision as this incense was so richly fragrant:

And here I am planning out my year over coffee, sitting on board the ship one early morning. (Note my cute Studio Ghibli stickers I found in Honk Kong – yay!)

Only a few more days and our cruise will be over. Then we have a brief stop in Macau before winging home to Australia.

I can’t wait to share the journey again with you this year. As much as I have enjoyed my break I have missed you all! Thoughts on Housekeeping

I’m finally home at my beautiful farm. We arrived early yesterday  morning, and I enjoyed a whole sunshiny day at home, doing homey kinds of things.

I’d kept my diary clear – no work, no outings, no visits from friends, no schedule of any kind. Why? I’ve just started Week Three of the week on, week off meds regime that just about floored me a fortnight ago. I was truly expecting that yesterday would be a total horror.

And then it wasn’t.

It’s an interesting thing, housework. Most of us hate it, resent it, and would rather be doing anything else. And yes, at times I can put my hand up and say ‘me too!’ to that school of thought.

But yesterday it was a pleasure to put a load of washing on and hang it out in the sunshine, to tidy up here and there, cut fresh flowers for the house, burn a little incense, play my favourite music, bake fruit cakes and cook up a big pot of soup.

Mine was a leisurely, moodle-y kind of day, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing house.

It was prescient too, because by nightfall the drugs had kicked in and I was feeling less than flash. And it’s been all downhill from there. But at least my home is tidy, the washing’s done, I have clean sheets on the bed that smell of sunshine and fresh air, there’s cake in the tin, soup in the pot, and I have fragrant blooms by my bedside.

From a Feng Shui point of view, it’s energetically a good thing to clear your clutter and let your home or office space be clean, orderly and aesthetically pleasing.

Creatively, emotionally and psychically sensitive people are all deeply affected by their environments too.

But even more interestingly, there are neurological studies that show people with depression and anxiety respond well to task completion where there is satisfaction or pleasure from having got the job done. It’s therapeutic for us to see an end result and to have been a major factor in that result – especially tasks that require physical involvement and that we enjoy.  Pleasant tasks or tasks that result in a feeling of accomplishment bring us emotional comfort and the increased activity level helps ward off or decrease depressive episodes. Creativity and positive new thought patterns are stimulated.

Housekeeping is also an act of self care, self love and self nurture.

Think about it. Haven’t there been times when performing routine or maintenance tasks such as cleaning the house, cooking, gardening, putting a set of bookshelves together, painting a piece of furniture or finishing some bookwork has put you into a better emotional space? Or given rise to a fresh idea or a solution to a problem?

If the thought of housework right now leaves you cold then take a look at your life:

  1. Are you getting enough rest? Exhaustion and housework don’t mix. Everything is an uphill battle when you’re exhausted or unwell. And what takes you six hours when you’re tired or unwell will usually only take one (or even less) when you’re firing on all cylinders again. Rest and recovery need to always be your first priority.
  2. Do you have any time for yourself and for your own interests? If there are other interests and activities that call you, find someone else to do that housework. A clean house feels good no matter who cleaned it!
  3. Do you actually schedule ‘down time’ and ‘maintenance time’, or are you just playing wishful thinking, expecting that somewhere in your crazy schedule, after all the other work is done, the housework will just miraculously happen?
  4. Can you get help with the tasks that are too hard or that you don’t enjoy or have time for? That way you’ll have more time for the tasks you DO enjoy.
  5. Can you get someone in to get it sorted for you, so that you can more easily keep it that way?
  6. Is there someone sharing your space who needs to pull their own weight here? We end up resentful, angry and exhausted when we’re always doing for others with no help, thanks or time left for ourselves.

Housework doesn’t have to be all misery and agony. But if it is, find ways to make it easier or get some help. A clean, comfortable home is an important refuge in this crazy world!
