“People from a planet without flowers would think we must be mad with joy the whole time to have such things about us.”
~ Iris Murdoch
Each morning when I venture out to the garden to pick a few herbs or some kale for my breakfast smoothie, I rejoice in the flowers which grow in the tumbling wilderness that is my vegetable garden.
I have always grown flowers alongside my herbs and vegetables. Flowers attract bees, they cleverly lure away pests, and most importantly, they bring me joy.
When did a food garden need to be so business-like that there was no room for whimsy, colour or self-expression?
Besides, fairies like flowers too.
I finally tore myself away from flower appreciation long enough to pick a few leaves for breakfast.
This morning’s green smoothie?
Kale, pear, apple, broccoli and coconut. Delicious!

What pretty flowers indeed and the smoothie sounds nice as well
Nasturtiums flowers and leaves would be great with an avocado, tomato, lemon and kale smoothie! 🙂
Nicole, I’ve just planted some flowers with my veggies too, on your advice. My smoothie was a green one too: kiwi fruit, brocolli, lemon balm and a gorgeous red chilli.
Yum! That sounds delicious.
Nicole what a delightful way to start the day and flowers just seem to be able to brighten the dullest mood! What quantities do you use for this juice because I would love to start my day this way. Also do you have a night time juice recommendation?
Chris, when I get a moment I will pop the recipe and a few of my other favorites in a post for you xx
Thank you Nicole that would be really appreciated.
