Up Late, Writing

“Listen.
I will lose myself
if it means I can find you.”
Alaska Gold

I didn’t mean to do it.

I meant to open up one folder, to check one fact, on one page, and to add one small note that was in danger of being forgotten if I didn’t immediately write it down.

I’m meant to be finishing the edits on the last three chapters of my memoir right now. I’m meant to be getting ready for my August retreat. I’m meant to be finishing the content for my new website. I’m meant to be catching up on sleep.

So it was only going to be one thing captured on paper. Not even proper writing. Just the recording of a small idea…

I sat down a little before 9pm to write that simple thing before I went to bed. A simple thing about a dragon and a sister who loved her missing brother very much and could not give up on him.

At 2am I looked up again and half the night had flown.

The fire had burned to cold ashes while I had been traversing volcanoes, diving with mermaids, flying through the night sky on the back of a winged beast, and engaging in acts of espionage and treachery.

My skin was goosefleshed and my feet were icy bricks.

My cheeks were streaked with tears, and there were three new chapters on the screen in front of me.

I didn’t mean to do it. But I am glad I did!

This writer’s life is such a glorious adventure.

Much love to you, Nicole ❤  xx

It’s a Fairy Forest here at the farm!

“Few humans see fairies or hear their music, but many find fairy rings of dark grass, scattered with toadstools, left by their dancing feet.”
Judy Allen

We’ve had a furious amount of rain here at the farm these past few weeks. Everything is damp and waterlogged, but green green green!

On my morning walk I marvelled at the fungi forest in our paddocks. Mushrooms of every shape and size.

The one in the picture above is the size of a dinner plate.

And these tiny delicate ones are covering the trunk of the fallen coral tree like lace.

Soon enough they’ll all be gone, so I am enjoying their magic while I can.

How about you? Can you slow down a little today, or over the weekend, and take yourself for a walk in nature? Who knows what you might find, what inspiration could come to you, or what you might learn about yourself and your feelings.

I can highly recommend walking. After our retreat I rushed straight into a busy week of medical appointments in the city and the stress of supporting family members. It was so good to come home yesterday and decompress by spending some quiet time in nature. Walking helped me come back to centre, release my stress and reprioritise what truly matters so that I don’t get caught up in external dramas. Maybe you will find that kind of peace too, if you walk long enough. If long walking’s impossible a short gentle stroll or even sitting outside in nature with a quiet and watchful eye can be enough.

Biggest hugs and love, Nicole ❤ xx

A miniature city of mushrooms

There’s almost nowhere to walk – with mushrooms everywhere under my feet

Perfect umbrellas for fairies!

Lace-like and delicate. For fairy dresses perhaps?

Saving Dudley Dog!

“Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day.” ~  John Grogan

Australia is in the grip of a ferocious heatwave right now. Late yesterday afternoon I lay down on my bed in our air-conditioned bedroom, thoroughly exhausted and grateful to be in the cool. I’ve worked a few big days, and been on call outside work hours too. So many people have been affected by the moon, and the energies of February. It’s been a time of high stress and peak transformation for many. Even my spare hours have been crowded with lending support to others. But that’s okay – it’s why I’m here.

As I was almost asleep I heard a loud but insistent voice. A squeaky, childlike voice.

“Wake up, wake up!” the voice said. “Dudley Dog is in trouble.”

It was my fairy friend, Sokli. She sounded quite agitated.

“Hurry up,” she said. “You have to call his mum. He’s too, too hot and there’s no water and no shade and he’s in big trouble. You have to help him NOW!”

Immediately I thought of a friend, and her dog Dudley. But she would never leave her old dog out in the backyard in a heatwave! I struggled to think who Sokli might be talking about.

“You know his mum,” she said. “The Jo Anne Lady. She just moved houses and she isn’t allowed to have a dog inside. You have to call her!”

Suddenly I did remember a Joanne lady who I haven’t talked to for over a year, possibly longer? Yes, that was the one. I turned on my computer and found her phone number. Joanne was still at work in the middle of the city, and surprised that I was calling her. Did she have a dog called Dudley? Yes, she did, a German Shepherd cross. He was a rescue dog, about four years old. She’d had him for six months and he was the love of her life. How did I know? Joanne’s surprise soon turned to panic as I told her he was having problems with the heat. She promised me she would leave work straight away and go home to her pet.

I hadn’t been off the phone ten minutes when Sokli began yelling in my ear again.

“TOO SLOW. SHE’S TOO SLOW! She has to hurry up or Dudley won’t make it!”

I called Joanne back. She was just leaving work, and still had to catch a bus and then walk the rest of the way home. The trip would take an hour. Maybe more if the traffic was bad.

Joanne moved to this house last weekend, after taking a transfer to a new city. She hadn’t met the neighbours yet. She didn’t know anyone who could check on her dog for her. “Call the RSPCA,” I urged her, “or your closest vet. I promise, it’s a genuine emergency.”

That was all I could do. I did a healing meditation for Dudley, and I called on every energy and entity I could think of to help him until someone turned up at his door. I put a post on my facebook wall, asking my friends to send love and energy to him and his mum too. I figured it would help both Dudley dogs and both mums.

Late last night Joanne rang me back. Someone from the vet’s office had rushed to Joanne’s house and found Dudley collapsed in the back yard. He was dangerously dehydrated and in severe heat distress. If they had found Dudley even an hour later they may not have been able to save him.

Joanne had left two bowls of water out for Dudley before she went to work, and he had a doghouse to shelter in too. But in a heatwave a doghouse becomes like a sauna – and offers no protection from the heat at all. In the late afternoon Dudley had absolutely no shade, and his water was long gone.

Image from www.vetary.com

Joanne texted me again this morning. Dudley is being moved from intensive care, and they expect he will make a full recovery. The vets are quite amazed at how well Dudley has bounced back. What a lucky thing that Sokli was paying attention yesterday afternoon, and that so many caring people sent love and energy Dudley’s way. Thank you to all of you who helped. I know it made a difference!

Please, if you are experiencing a heatwave or a hot day, think of your animals and do all you can to provide them with a cool shady place to rest, and lots of water in multiple locations in case one gets knocked over. Shell baths with water or ice are good too. If possible, let your pets come into the cool of the house until the heatwave has passed.

There are some excellent suggestions for keeping your pets cool here.

It’s also a kindness if you can leave bowls of water out for the birds and the wildlife. Everyone is affected by this kind of heat.

Thank you again, and lots of love from Sokli and I,

Nicole <3 xx

Some holiday snapshots today. The picture above is of the sun coming up over Santorini. We were on deck in the cool morning air before dawn, and saw an enormous sea turtle come up to breathe just as we sailed slowly past.

This next one, the steps to a chapel within the walled city of Dubrovnic.

2016-06-14 10.11.19

I know. It’s a lizard. But not just any lizard. And the photo does not do her justice. She was actually a bronze-green colour, with amber eyes. But she was shy…

So, why is there a photo of a lizard? Remember that I told you Sokli was talking to the lizards. I hadn’t seen a single one, although she assured me that there were many in Dubrovnic. So she made me sit down on the steps of the chapel, and she called one over to meet me. The lizard came down from the roof (Sokli pointed her out to me), she crept down the wall, and then came level with my eyes. After I took her photo she gazed straight at me for the longest time.

I felt a great sense of peace and happiness come over me, and Sokli assures me that the lizard gave me a Blessing. I have never been the recipient of a lizard’s blessing before!

The picture below is part of the ruins of Ancient Olympia. This was an unexpectedly wonderful site energetically, built as it is on the remains of even earlier temples and energetic gridlines. There are layers of meaning and significance here. It provides an oasis of serenity with all of the old trees and stone, and the river boundaries with their fresh running water. I’m looking forward to bringing some of you back here with me next time!

Part of the old walled city of Dubrovnic. It was good to be well enough to walk the walls (very Game of Thrones, don’t you think!) but I didn’t see a single dragon.

Love to you all, Nicole xx

Fairy Magic!

“That’s the thing about magic; you’ve got to know it’s still here, all around us, or it just stays invisible for you.”
~ Charles de Lint

I have a special necklace that I often wear when I am working. It has a small rose-gold cross, a Phantom Good Mark (yep, truly – Ghost who walks and all that) that Ben had made for me, and a St Raphael medal (St Raphael is known as the healing angel).

When we came up to the city last week I accidentally left it behind at the farm after taking it off and leaving it beside my bed the night before we left home. How frustrating. I’d really wanted to wear it overseas.

So you can imagine my surprise when I opened my glasses case yesterday. I have two pairs of reading glasses that I only use when my eyes are playing up from Lyme. I keep one on my desk in Brisbane, and one at the farm. I haven’t used either pair for months but yesterday my vision was so bad that I needed them.

There was my necklace, hidden beneath my glasses! I should have known that might happen. Strange things like this are quite the regular occurrence in our household.

2016-03-07 08.53.04

Thank you, Sokli.

Of course it was fairy magic.

How else could I explain it?

All Things Fairy!

2015-12-12 11.48.31

“Things that fairies love? Well, every fairy is different, just likes peoples are. So I will tell you what I love. I love flowers and crystals and shiny sparkly things, and babies smiling, and people laughing, and music, and the smell of puppy feet. And I love you! Thank you for believing in fairies!” ~ Sokli

We had the loveliest ‘Making Friends with Fairies’ workshop yesterday. Kids and adults all gathered around, talking about one of the things I love best – fairies!

We talked about some of the different kinds of fairies, where they live, and what they do. Flower Fairies and Treekeepers, Forest Fairies, Mountain Fairies, Rock Fairies and Water Sprites to name a few. 🙂 We learned how fairies can help us and our pets and our homes and gardens.

We played with crystals and learned how to make a fairy garden, and then we made some lovely sparkly fairy attractors to hang in our gardens or houses.

Here are a few of them. Aren’t they pretty!

2015-12-12 12.13.17

In the afternoon I ran another workshop called  ‘Introduction to Gridding with Crystals’, and I was very grateful that my fairy friend Sokli decided to visit and share some of her knowledge with the group by telling people what crystals were good for them, and why.

It was a super day, and we all learned a lot. I’m so happy that I am able to share my love of fairies and crystals with others. And it was a lovely surprise to have Sokli turn up to speak with us.

Her biggest message for everyone? Be kind. Be kind to yourself. Be kind to each other. Be kind to the animals and nature places. Be kind to the planet.

Whether you believe in fairies or not, I think that’s a pretty good message.

It’s my final day of Pop-Up Shop today, and it’s also our Healing Practice Day, so if you’d like to come along and practice some simple energy healing techniques for yourself and others we’d love to see you. Details on my Events page.

Thank you too, a million times over, for everyone who has already bought one of my Planners. Some of you have also been asking if I could make a monthly subscription for the $275 year-long course and support. I’m sure I can, but I need a stretch of a few good hours in front of the computer to work out how to make that happen. So please be patient with me and I’ll do my best to get it sorted out for you in the next couple of days, as soon as I get a spare moment.

Much love to you, Nicole <3 xx

Colour Me Calm

“Give crayons. Adults are disturbingly impoverished of these magical dream sticks.” ~ Dr. SunWolf

I’ve found a wonderful new form of meditation.

It’s colouring.

To give myself a calming break in a busy day, I take five or ten minutes just for me. I sit quietly with my tube of pretty pencils and my fairy book (thanks, Thanh – loveliest present ever), happily choosing colours which I then apply to the page.

2015-03-10 07.41.08

It’s a joyful and reflective process. Often my colour choices are quick and completely intuitive. Sometimes they require me to sit and gaze restfully at the page until I am drawn to a particular pencil.

It doesn’t matter if I only shade one or two tiny feathers, or make a few spots of detail here or there. It’s the process that is calming.

It’s the losing myself to the picture and the forming colours that is relaxing.

2015-03-10 08.02.01

I never thought that, as an adult, I would take up colouring books again. I’m not confident with drawing. I have never thought of myself as particularly artistic. But to have an outline on a page, and to use my imagination to bring that page to life? It’s a delightful activity.

If you can’t find a colouring book you like, do a quick google search of colouring pages for adults or colouring mandalas for adults. You’ll find plenty of beautiful images to download and print, ready for you to work your own colourful magic.

For stress reduction, nurture and reconnection, colouring is a simple activity that I highly recommend!

The Harry Emergency

2015-01-08 19.33.38

“After years of having a dog, you know him. You know the meaning of his snuffs and grunts and barks. Every twitch of the ears is a question or statement, every wag of the tail is an exclamation.”
~ Robert McCammon, Boy’s Life

Something’s not been right with Harry these past few days. He’s been quiet, out of sorts, and a little bit whiny. Not his normal Cafe Dog personality at all.

And he’s been smelly, which we thought was just his usual farm dog roll-in-all-the-filth style.

But no.

Remember when Harry had the terrible accident with the stick?

Last night at the farm he was restless. He went outside and came in smelling worse than ever.

‘I’m giving him a bath,’ I declared, and promptly put Harry in the shower. As I washed him clumps of hair fell out around his neck, clogging the drain. He had lumps and small hot spots everywhere.

‘It’s the stick,’ whispered my fairy friend Sokli in my ear. ‘Harry’s real sick with little nasty bits of stick. He needs the hostibul soon.’

So we grabbed a few things, packed the ute and drove back to Brisbane.

We had a sleepless night with our small hound. He was fretful and in pain, and one by one abscesses rose and burst around his neck. The only thing that soothed him was application of essential oils (Young Living’s Lavender, Melaleuca and Purification in some coconut oil) to the wounds and more oils (Young Living’s Valor, Helichrysum and Joy in coconut oil) on his spine. Ben and I took turns sitting with him until dawn came, so that we could get poor Harry ready for the vet.

We’re heading off now. Fingers crossed for good outcomes for our precious pup!

♥ The Message and Gift of each Magical Book ♥

Each Magical Book image has a message for you. I have also selected a crystal to best support the message and energies of your chosen Book.  You could wear or hold this crystal, pop it in your pocket, under your pillow or beside your bed. (If you’d like to know more about working with crystals click here.) The Action Step is a tangible step you can take to begin incorporating this wisdom in your life.

1.  Ancient Manuscript:

Message – Trust your own judgement. It’s time for major change, even if that change begins in the smallest of ways. You’re being supported to create an energy of transformation that will take you far from where you are now. There is a great force of synchronicity at your disposal. All you need to do is allow, and be brave enough to act. Begin things. End things. Be active in creating this new life. You deserve to be happy and fulfilled.

Crystal – Tiger Iron

Action Step – Spend some time thinking about how you want your life to look. record your thoughts in a journal. When you are ready, begin to put a plan together. Where might you start? Who or what could support you? Start to give your dreams some form. Trust in good outcomes, even if the beginning of this transformation will be modest.

2.  Magical Daisy Book:

Message – Love and Friendship is coming your way. What a kind, loving and beautiful soul you are. Right now there is a wonderful opportunity for you to bring magic to some existing relationships, allowing them to be revitalised. There is also the opportunity to meet new people who will become significant in your life. As you love, so will that love be returned, deepening the relationship and giving you new levels of emotional connection and satisfaction.

Crystal – Rose Quartz

Action Step – Each day find things for which you can be grateful. Live in a way that pours love and gratitude from your heart. Seek out the people, places and things that make you happy. Avoid the people, places and situations that bring you down. Write a list of your dream friend or partner. Put the completed list in a pink envelope, and then place the envelope somewhere safe. Send your list a little love and energy each day to magnetise love into your life.

3.  White Light Book:

Message – Be purposeful in bringing your gifts to the world. You know it. The Universe is calling you, reminding you that it’s time. Time to write that book, start that business, invest that money, study that thing which furthers you somehow. Trust that you have something valuable to share with the world. Believe in yourself now, and invest in yourself and your dreams.

Crystal – Clear Quartz

Action Step – Sit with yourself and be brave in asking what it is you really want to do with your life. Create some big goals, and then break those goals down into small steps. Choose a place and begin. Each week, put energy into your plan and your dreams. Know that you can make this happen. Know that it is time.

4.  Magical Lands Book:

Message – Nature has great restorative gifts for you right now. Maybe you need to change your diet to include a wider range and quantity of fruits and vegetables. Perhaps what is needed is more time in the outdoors, or a hobby or sport that allows you to move more and to feel the sun on the face and the wind in your hair. A holiday in the mountains or by the sea? Perfect!

Crystal – Green Aventurine

Action Step – Embrace your well-being. Look to the ideas and ancient healing methodologies of other lands. Try yoga, meditation, acupuncture, herbal medicine or tai chi. Be adventurous in looking further afield for what can heal, restore and uplift you. Maybe a health retreat in Byron Bay, Bali or Thailand. Perhaps a practitioner or a workshop that promotes these ancient methods for restoring balance and creating sustainable well-being.

5. Cosmic Rainbow Book:

Message – Honey, you need some fun! What’s most needed in your life right now are activities that bring joy. That could be hanging out with friends, listening to music, travel, playing games, starting a hobby or joining a group. Do what makes your heart sing. If you don’t know what that is, then gift yourself time to find out.

Crystal – Fluorite

Action Step – Clear some space in your diary. Maybe there’s something you used to enjoy, which you don’t do any more. Make time for it again! Search out movies, music, festivals, galleries and places you’ve always wanted to visit. Do something you haven’t done before. Make more time for family and friends. Schedule some time just for you!

6.  Book of Shadows:

Message – Spirituality and time for connecting to your Inner Wisdom needs to be a priority right now. Expect magic. Expect clarity, breakthroughs, inspiration and guidance from unexpected but helpful quarters. You have a powerful intuitive side, and it’s time to learn how to connect with this wisdom and guiding force within you.

Crystal – Amethyst

Action Step – Make time for self-reflection, journalling, meditation and prayer. Be open to guidance from outside of yourself as well. Make use of tools such as crystals, tarot and other messenger cards, runes and other divination items if that feels right. Ask once, and be guided by the answer, whatever that may be. Stay open to possibility and to acting on insights. Think deeply about the big questions. Expect answers.

7.  Mythical Journey Book:

Message – Courage. It’s time to go back to, and heal your past. There are issues and situations from your past, that, in remaining hidden, unspoken or unresolved, are preventing you from healing, from knowing expansion, from allowing you to transcend these falsely imposed limits. Sometimes it is  possible to simply get into an allowing space, and ‘let go’ of that old energy without having to examine or re-live it. Sometimes we benefit from guidance and professional help and advice. Always, we benefit from thinking on the blessings and the lessons inherent in those situations which have caused us pain.

Crystal – Citrine

Action Step – Think about the events, relationships and actions that you have buried, or that continue to bring you discomfort of shame. You are being supported to work through and let go of these old energies right now. Truth must be brought into the light. These old hurts must be let go, or like anchors around your heart and soul, you will continue to be held back by them. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Look to counsellors, healers and all other forms of support workers who can aid you in your situation.

8: Fairy’s Book:

Message – There is a special magic around you right now, bringing breakthroughs, help and miracles. The Fairy Book connects you to Loved Ones who have crossed over, Ancestors you have never met, members of your Soul Group, Fairies, Guides, Angels and all kinds of other Light Beings. Know that you’re not alone. Know that you are heard, and that help is coming.

Crystal – Moss Agate or Opalite

Action Step – Ask! Reach out with your heart, your prayers, your meditations. Form that question in your mind. Have a conversation with someone who has crossed over, or with your guides and angels. Sit under a tree or in the garden and call on the fairies and nature spirits. Call on God. Don’t be afraid. Trust that injustice, obstacles, difficulties and dilemmas that have caused you great anxiety and worry will soon begin to dissolve or resolve. Know that you are loved. Expect magic and miracles. Trust in Divine Timing.
