Planning For A Wonderful (and Ordinary) Life

A few weeks before my friend Angela died from cancer, we were texting. Angela was in a hospital palliative care ward, and I had only just been released from hospital two hours earlier after experiencing heart problems. When I received her text I was sitting at a local cafe with Ben, eating a late breakfast and reading the morning paper – my first non-cardiac ward meal in days. Finally I could eat salt and fat and sugar again! I still had my hospital ID bracelets on, and I was covered in the sticky plasters that had held the wires for my heart monitor in place.

Gee girl, she texted me, you have such a wonderful life.

Many people would not have agreed. I sure have my own problems, as most of us do. My life (except for the psychic bits) is very ordinary. My health, at times, is perfectly rotten. But Angela understood the value in my everyday world, as she stared at death and thought about all of those ordinary things that she would never do again.

Then my friend Nicole wrote this on my facebook page, in response to another recent blog post:

“I have a request for a blog post. I constantly marvel at your ability to manage your time well, even when dealing with Lyme’s. You plan your time at the beginning of the year, you have clear containers and plans for your days, and yet somehow you still manage to find the time to go to cafes and spend time with sick friends. AND you can change plans mid-stream. Meanwhile, I feel like I struggle to do everything I want to do . . . I flip-flop between being disciplined about it, and then totally wasting time because I “owe” it to myself to take a rest.”

Mine’s not a glamorous life. I live in a tiny farmhouse, and my days are measured slowly. I often spend whole days in my pyjamas. I don’t own a flash car, or lots of bling. Those things aren’t important to me, although I’m fine with them being important to you. Each to their own. My health (thanks to Lyme disease) still limits many of my choices, even though I am moving back to wellness. My friend Nicole is right too – I change my schedule, often out of necessity, when illness flairs or if I am needed to deal with some kind of emergency, as sometimes happens in my line of work.

But my life is also beautiful. And meaningful. In the midst of too often having a flat battery and lots of major health hiccups I still manage to get things done.

Having been ill with undiagnosed Lyme disease for thirty years has taught me a few things. I can’t plan the way I once tried to in the corporate world, or the way that most success coaches and strategists advise. I need to honour my intuition, to listen to my body and to the greater guidance of the universe, and to work with strong goals metered by a massive dose of flexibility.

I have crafted a life that honours my limitations and my loves. I have found ways  to run a thriving business which takes into account the fact that I have been a semi-invalid most of my adult life, and which makes more money with me working part-time than when I worked  80 hours weeks in the corporate sector. It’s been a necessity for me to live like this. To be goal-oriented but also broken. To actually own the broken bits, as well as my continued ambition and desires in the face of all of that limitation.

What does my life look like? I live on a farm at the back of Byron Bay. This weekend we have attended a low-key local art exhibition. No big names. No photos in the social pages. We mingled with friends, enjoyed a drink, and then sat in inviting chairs on the lawn in the late afternoon sunshine and talked about all kinds of things.

We’ve walked on the beach, drunk good coffee and eaten tasty breakfast at our favourite cafe. (Why so many breakfasts out? It’s my best time of day, I like getting out of the house and I have no stamina for most evening activities.)

I’ve napped after lunch, and gone to bed early each night.

During the day I’ve worked on my special project, messaged with loved ones and dear clients going through hard times, made vats of chai tea once the weather turned rainy, and baked more Christmas Cakes as gifts for friends.

How did I get such a wonderful and ordinary life? I have made conscious choices based on my values and abilities (including my disabilities), and I long ago decided to be grateful for the gift of living by celebrating the small details – even as many larger things have been denied me. I plan my life, and I think about what I want and what is important to me. I work my plan, but I build flexibility, support and kindness to myself into that plan. I live mindfully as much as possible.

There’s a lot I haven’t done too, in this mindful life. I haven’t driven a car lately, because my health still isn’t good enough for that. I haven’t watched much television. (We don’t even have one at the farm!) I haven’t stayed up late much or enjoyed a wild social life. I haven’t spent hours glued to facebook or to social media. I haven’t spent time on things I don’t want to do, low value activities that don’t support my goals, or activities that make others happy at my expense.

2016 is almost here, and it’s shaping up to be an extraordinary year for shift and change. The energies of 2016 support mindful living, and consciously co-creating a richly satisfying life. It’s the best alignment of energies I’ve ever seen for launching a new aspect of yourself, a new business idea, for getting a project completed, or revitalising and re-purposing your existence. And I really want to help you make the most of that.

So that’s the secret project I’ve been working on. It’s a tool and associated support to help you to shape a life for yourself that is more meaningful and which helps you take control of the direction of your days. I’m almost finished and I can’t wait to share the details with you. If it has worked for me all of this time, I know it’s going to work for you too.

Hello, Lovelies ❤

October snuck up on me,but we’ve made peace and I’ve had a solid investigation of the energies for the month ahead. Let me share my insights with you.

October is a month for nestling and cocooning. For finding and nurturing that sense of belonging. For doing the things that fill your heart with gladness, peace and contentment. It’s a month for working away on projects that have meaning for you, for quiet time and family time. It’s the perfect month for anything to do with heart and home.

You’ll be amazed at just how much you can get done in October, as you focus on what is important to you. It especially favours planning, study, writing, art and all forms of creativity. If you have a home renovation project or you just need to do a big tidy up, October is a fine month for getting things moving.

But no matter where you are, or what you are doing in October, make sure to spend a little time gifting yourself peacefulness, connection and a sense of home – whatever that means to you.

 

Card for the Month:

I’ve chosen two cards for October for you: one from the Osho Zen Tarot Deck, and one from Colette Baron-Reid’s The Enchanted Map. Remember that I don’t use these cards in the conventional way, but rather as a stimulus for channelled information.

The message of  Abundance is being at home wherever you are, and finding reasons to be grateful for what you already have.

This is the energy of being at home, or at work, or anywhere at all in our daily lives, and being fully present in each moment, while appreciating the great gift that is our life, and this planet that we call home.

It’s about being the King or Queen of our personal domain. Not in an egotistical way, but in a manner where we feel supported and where our needs and desires are being met.

October wants you to get creative and happy where you are. To relax in your home, and enjoy the space around you. If your home space is not reflective of who you are, and doesn’t meet your needs then change it! Do what you can to help yourself feel more comfortable. Kick back and enjoy some replenishment time on your own, if that’s what’s wanted. Invite friends over, or to share a meal and some good times with your loved ones if that appeals to you.

October’s’s gift is the ability to find or create for ourselves a space of contentment and comfort – and from that energy of contentment we find ourselves more open, more generous, happier and kinder to ourselves and others. Creativity flows. We find ourselves wanting to work towards our goals, but from a place of inspiration and balance rather than grind, fear or drudgery.

The second card, Home, supports the message of Abundance.

Home says to you ‘make time for what’s important’. Shut the door on people and situations that drain you, and find comfort in the solitude and safety of your own space. In the quiet of your home let your mind soar. Write, create, paint, dance, build things, study, focus on your goals and interests.

Magical transformations can occur in October. Lots of things can be birthed, or take shape, or even be completed. It’s a fertile time, and a wonderful time for all kinds of creativity.

Remember to have some small celebrations. Not for any particular reason, but just because you are alive, and you feel the seasons changing, and it’s raining or there’s sunshine, or a moonlit night, or fog!

 

Even as you are busy, you will find that this joyful October energy restores you and replenishes you. It will make you want to dance amid the daisies and tiptoe through the tulips.

If things are ending, don’t be too sad. Know that there is a season for everything and everyone, and that there will always be more beginnings in every cycle, including yours.

 

Bonus October Meditation:

I’ve recorded a short meditation to help you find that heart-space that October offers. It takes about twelve minutes. All you need is to sit or lie somewhere quietly and then just follow along to the sound of my voice:

 

 

October comes heralding good things. Don’t stretch yourself thin. Take a little time to make yourself comfortable at home, to rest, and to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Work towards your dreams, with lots of stops for cups of tea and other life adventures.

Guided Meditation for Orienting Mind Awareness

This is the second in a series of seven weekly guided meditations I am recording for you.

The focus of this week’s meditation is the mind. This guided meditation will help you to be aware of the positive gifts of your mind, and teaches you a simple technique for accessing intuitive and subconscious wisdoms.

You’ll need to set aside about twenty minutes for this meditation. Sit or lie somewhere quietly, using pillows or blankets if needed to make yourself comfortable. Then simply close your eyes and follow the sound of my voice. It’s fine to let yourself fall asleep during the meditation, or immediately afterwards.

Create Positive Change Program – Week 7

‘Throw your hat in the ring’ – Meaning: Make or take up a challenge, or demonstrate one’s willingness to join an enterprise.

 

This week we’re getting serious about creating change, with my Throw your hat in the ring challenge! 

When we’re inviting change into our lives it’s important to think about the sorts of changes we want, and to spend time visualising and exploring these changes and aligning ourselves with that energy.

But you know what? Eventually we’re going to have to take some form of action. We have to throw our hat in the ring.

Ask that person out for coffee. Ring the number on the piece of paper from the band flyer looking for a bass player. Send your enrolment forms in for that course. Apply for that job. Run your first workshop. Submit your novel. Have the hard discussion about your promotion. Join the gym and take your first class. Book that holiday. Start that craft project. Visit the place you can’t stop thinking about.

Amazing things happen when we begin to put ourselves out there.

And no, it doesn’t always turn out the way we’d planned it in our head….

The date is a disaster, but we meet the sweetest guy in the bus on the way home. The job we apply for doesn’t come off, but our resume is ready and so we bravely fire it off to three other positions and one of them works out and we land a fulfilling new role.

When we begin to take risks things we hadn’t even considered come into play, and whole new vistas can open up in front of us.

Throwing your hat in the ring is about sending a message to the Universe; I’m ready for this.

Count Your Blessings!

One of the benefits of your Blessings Book is that when you read over it you’ll be able to begin identifying the sorts of moments and activities that give you peace, joy or comfort. When we can knowingly identify these things we can include more of them in our day and we develop understanding of what truly makes us happy. Often there will be surprises in there, or things we’d long forgotten about. Our Blessings Book starts returning us to ourselves.

Recording the small and simple blessings and the peak moments in our day reminds us of the positive energy already present in our lives.  As we focus on this positive feel-good energy, we attract more of these moments and blessings into our lives.

Once again, this week write down three blessings in your life every day – three simple things for which you are grateful. Counting our blessings puts us into a more receptive and abundant state of mind.

Write them like this: Today I am thankful for (the blessing) because (write down a simple reason). eg: Today I am thankful for my mentoring students, because they are putting their many diverse gifts out into the world and sharing love, energy, wisdom, healing and care with others. And that rocks!

Affirm the Positive!

Take your rock from Week Six and thank it. Write the Affirmation you used in your Blessings Book. You can now place the sixth rock beside your bed or somewhere where you’ll see it often.

Select the seventh rock from the eight you selected at the start of this course. This is your seventh Affirmation Stone. Carry it around with you, or place it somewhere where you can see and hold it every day.

Hold this seventh stone in your hands. Now think of something else in your life where you want to create change. This week we’re focusing on what we are READY TO DO. Affirm that as a statement of declaration to the Universe.

When we state that we are ready to do something, we’re saying to the Universe ‘Hey! Bring on that delivery. I’m here and I’m primed for action. My sleeves are rolled up. I’m eager to engage. Let’s do it!’

State it like this: I’m ready to  ______.

Get excited about having this new energy in your life. As you affirm it, really see yourself doing it, having it, being it.

Using your Gratitude Rock

This little rock is well and truly charged up now. Even simply holding it will be tuning you in to this good energy. As you hold your stone tonight say to yourself I am richly Blessed. I have an Abundance of Good in my life.  Then hold in your mind one or more image of a thing you have been grateful for today.  It doesn’t matter if you review your Blessings from your Blessing Book, or add in something new.  Swell that positive energy up in your heart like a beautiful golden light, and give a heart-felt Thank You, Thank You, Thank You to the Universe. Visualise a tiny shower of golden light travelling from your heart into your Gratitude Rock.

Now imagine all of the other people who are taking part in this Positive Change Program with us – people from all over the world, just like you. Once again build up a strong positive energy in your heart, and then imagine shooting a stream of golden light out into the Universe to those people. Each of us benefits for the love and support we share, and we grow stronger and more open and connected.

Say Thank you.  I Bless You.  I intend for you Positive Change, Love, Miracles and Abundance. Know that as you are saying this for them, they are also saying this for you. Feel that connection and gratitude and know that there is real love and support for you here. Place your rock back beside your bed, and close your eyes, cocooned in this good energy. This week take half an hour, sit down with your journal and get comfy.

Review the shortlist of changes you want to create that you wrote down in week five, and the helpful people and tools you already have from week six.

Now ask yourself:  What’s the next step?

You’ll know it. Just thinking about it will make you feel a little excited. And probably a little sick. It’s a risk, putting yourself out there, but without risks and challenges we never grow.

So, jot down the action steps. There might be a few. There might only be one.

And then…

DO the thing.

Apply for the job.

Ask that person out.

Fill in the form and click send.

Set the wheels in motion.

Wishing you an action-packed week. There is such tremendous energy here right now for making changes. You can do it. Don’t hold back!

Create Positive Change Program – Week 6

2013 and 2014 are years for inviting and creating powerful positive change in our lives. And knowing that, there’s a decision to be made…

Do I actively seek change and open myself to these energies, or do I remain closed and passively let life keep happening to me?

If you’re working through this program, you’ve already made that decision. YOU are aligning yourself with these energies and you WILL invoke and create change.

When we recognize our desire for a new way of being, and we begin to work with and practice that commitment out in the world, it’s amazing how the Universe musters to our aid. We live in a complex interconnected energetic system, and our thinking and actions magnetize us to attracting more of whatever it is that we are thinking about and focusing on.

This week we’re going to make deliberate use of that assistance by putting our attention on who can help us, and what tools we already have, or might to add to our toolkit!

Affirm the Positive!

Hold this sixth stone in your hands. Now think of something else in your life that you want to change. This week we’re focusing on what we want to ATTRACT. Affirm that as a statement of declaration to the Universe.

Be bold and creative with this. It doesn’t matter how big or small your desire for attraction is.

State it like this: I now attract ______.

But…

Yeah, you knew there’d be a but!

And here it is: When you affirm this declaration, you must be able to feel in your heart that it is possible so that you connect with the integrity and possibility of the statement. If you can do that, you’ll be creating powerful magic. But if you can’t you’ll actually be making yourself anti-magnetic to that thing!

Let me show you a simple way to see if you’re on track with this week’s affirmation:

Lets just suppose that your desire is to create more money in your life. So your first affirmation is

I now attract a massive Gold Lotto Win.

Say that affirmation out loud and then immediately tune in to your heart. What’s going on there? Can you truly visualise that happening? Can that statement be real for you? If that voice inside you is saying, ‘Oh sure – like that’s ever going to happen!’, if you’re feeling wriggly and stupid and uncomfortable, or like an outright fraud? Well, they’re pretty clear indications that you are NOT aligned with this statement and you’re out of integrity with it. So the message you’re actually putting out into the Universe is more like this:

I am so unworthy of financial gain. I am comfortable with lack.

And you know what? The Universe always delivers…

If money’s what you need, then find another way to express that which fits more comfortably with your current belief structure. Maybe something like this:

I now attract increased cash flow. Abundance comes to me in small and surprising ways.

This is one I’ve personally used, and it has served me well. Note the little modifier I put on the end of my affirmation. At the time I was so broke, so on struggle street that it seemed implausible and impossible for my fortunes to suddenly change. (even now I want to reach back in time and give that insecure low-self-esteem me a big hug!) Back then I could never see me winning lotto! But little extra bits of money and abundance? Yes, I could be comfortable with that.

Do you know what happened when I used that affirmation? I got an unexpected refund on an item, my phone company told me they’d overcharged me and gave me a credit towards my next bill, I found twenty dollars in a pants pocket, and then, most surprisingly of all, I found $800 in fifty dollar bills just blowing along a main road when I went for a walk one really early morning. When I rang to report it to the police, they told me to keep the money as ownership would be impossible to prove.

So, the big thing I want you to really understand here is the importance of choosing an affirmation that your heart feels ready for, excited about and in tune with!

Each day hold your affirmation stone in your hands and repeat the declaration, out loud, or in your mind. You can do this just once, or as many times as you like. Say your declaration with enthusiasm and commitment. Put lots of energy into the words I NOW ATTRACT. Feel yourself aligning to the vibration of this new energy in your life.

Get excited!

Homework:

Find half an hour in your week, sit down with your journal and get comfy.

Review the shortlist of changes you want to create that you wrote down last week.

Then ask yourself the following two questions for each point:

  1. Who can help me?
  2. What do I already have in my toolkit that I can start using now?

Who can help me? This could be a course, a coach, a mentor, a friend, your partner, an on-line forum or a book, just to name a few.

What do you already have in your toolkit? Maybe you’ve completed some study, or gained experience, or made a start. Perhaps you already have the camera, the computer, the fabric, the art material, the bare patch of garden, a relationship that can be built upon.

Start to appreciate what you have in your life to use as a starting point, and be aware of what else you need so that you can begin to draw those people and energies into your life.

When you begin to become an active participant in the change process, all sorts of breakthroughs and synchronicities begin to occur.

Wishing you a week of insights, connections and magic. Have courage and belief in yourself and your dreams. This change you desire is entirely possible, especially when you become a willing co-creator of your own destiny. Don’t put it off. Now is the time!

Join Me for a Magical Carpet Ride?

I’m a firm believer in the power of imagination. Connecting in to pleasurable memories, imaginings or visualisations has a proven positive affect upon our mood, our creative ability and our energetic vibration. It reduces stress, inflammation and anxiety and helps magnetise us to further abundance and good.

(Note: Conversely, this also works with dwelling on negativities, worries and past pains  darkening our mood, increasing stress, thwarting our creativity and lowering our vibration – so try your best not to go in that direction…)

There’s a question game my friends and I like to play sometimes. It involves using our imagination to take us somewhere fabulous, and then sharing that experience with each other. In fact, hearing about someone else’s magical journey has often inspired the rest of us to make real life travel plans, or at least menu choices!

And at times when my life has been less than wonderful, this game has kept me thinking of a brighter tomorrow, and got me through some less than great days. Many of the things I’ve imagined have ended up coming true. How fun is that!!!

PS – My 24 hours? While my puppies are being lovingly taken care of back at our farm I’ll wake up in a private bungalow right on the beach in a beautiful and remote part of Thailand. Of course my husband will be beside me! After my meditation we’ll go for a swim in the warm, tranquil ocean, enjoying the quiet and our own company. After a long walk along the beach we’ll dine on fresh papaya and lime, salad and a made-to-order omelette. Then a trip to visit some temples and local markets – lots of walking around and taking in the atmosphere, snacking on delicious Thai food and drinks. Later we’ll go for a massage and be completely spoiled with pampering. Perhaps another dip in the ocean. Then a romantic candlelit seafood dinner on the beach, before dancing the rest of the night away.

Create Positive Change Program – Week 2

One of the biggest obstacles to change is that feeling of overwhelm we get when we look at where we are now, and then at the distance between us and our goal/heart’s desire/impossible dream. The bigger the gap, the more likely we are to feel stuck, or unable to make that first step. In fact, we can get so stuck that we can no longer even conceptualise that first step!

It’s not unlike that brain freeze feeling you get from eating ice-cream too fast – there’s pain, confusion and a need to lie down in a darkened room. And that’s when the ghosts come out – all those voices from our past (or even our present) that tell us we can’t do it, we’re not good enough, we don’t deserve it, we don’t have what it takes. Our failures parade before us. We see all the things we’re not, all the things we don’t have, and all our glaring faults.

This week we’re going to work with energies that get us back on solid ground – connected into our heart space, and able to ‘hear’ our inner guidance about what to do next.

Anchoring your heart energy

Lie down on the ground. If at all possible lie on the earth itself – the grass or sand or rock or dirt. Now imagine the back of your heart opening up and connecting deep into the core of the earth. Feel that earth energy warmly grounding you, supporting and nurturing you. Then open the front of your heart and connect it up into the sky. Go up beyond the blue. Feel the sun, the moon and the stars. Open to the wisdom and guidance of Universal energy. In this space of being anchored and connected just breathe and fill your body up with energy and love. Let yourself be replenished.

What do you feel?  Be open to any insights or revelations. Do this process a few times over the next week. What you feel and become aware of will change over time. Write down anything important in your journal.

Count Your Blessings!

Every day this week write down three blessings in your life – three simple things for which you are grateful. See if you can come up with new things each day. Cultivate an attitude of awareness, actively looking for the positive moments in your life.

Write them like this: Today I am thankful for (the blessing) because (write down a simple reason). eg: Today I am grateful for my barista because she always makes the most wonderful creamy latte for me!

When we count our Blessings we are inviting positive energy into our lives and putting ourselves into a receptive and abundant state of mind.

Affirm the Positive!

Take your rock from Week One, and thank it. Write the Affirmation you used in your Blessings Book. You can now place the first rock beside your bed or somewhere where you’ll see it often.

Select the second rock from the eight you selected at the start of this course. This is your second Affirmation Stone. Carry it around with you, or place it somewhere where you can see and hold it every day.

Hold this second stone in your hands. Now think of something else in your life that you want to change. Affirm that as a statement of declaration to the Universe,

Here are some examples:

I choose Healthy Relationships.

I choose Financial Stability.

I choose Bright New Ideas.

 

Each day hold that stone in your hands and repeat your declaration, out loud, or in your mind. You can do this just once, or as many times as you like. Say your declaration with enthusiasm and commitment. This simple act of declaration begins to align you with this energy, opening you to more of this thing in your life.

Using your Gratitude Rock!

The Gratitude Rock anchors positive energy and gratitude at the end of every day.  You can carry your stone with you, or leave it beside your bed.  At night, before you go to sleep, hold your Gratitude Rock in your hand.

As you hold the stone say to yourself I am richly Blessed. I have an Abundance of Good in my life.  Then hold in your mind one or more image of a thing you have been grateful for today.  It doesn’t matter if your review your Blessings from your Blessing Book, or add in something new.  Swell that positive energy up in your heart like a beautiful golden light, and give a heart-felt Thank You, Thank You, Thank You to the Universe. Visualise a tiny shower of golden light travelling from your heart into your Gratitude Rock.

Now here’s the fun bit – imagine all of the other people who are taking part in this Positive Change Program with us – people from all over the world, just like you. Once again build up a strong positive energy in your heart, and then imagine shooting a stream of golden light out into the Universe to those people.

Say Thank you.  I Bless You.  I intend for you Positive Change, Love, Miracles and Abundance. Know that as you are saying this for them, they are also saying this for you. Feel that connection and gratitude and know that there is real love and support for you here. Place your rock back beside your bed, and go to sleep, cocooned in this good energy.
