The Big Sky Above Me, and my Aboriginal Aunties in my Heart

“There is one spectacle grander than the sea, that is the sky; there is one spectacle grander than the sky, that is the interior of the soul.”

~ Victor Hugo

Hello, Lovelies.

I’m in Arizona right now. This morning I left my hotel room and went for a long walk in the early morning sunlight. It’s winter here, and the air was crisp, but lit with sunshine. Yoga pants and a singlet top were fine once I got moving. As long as I was moving and in the sun I was warm.

The further I walked from my hotel the more I was struck by the similarities between the Kimberley in Australia’s Outback, and the desert here.

In both places there are big skies. Skies so big that they stretch right down to the ground around your feet, so it feels as if you are walking on the rim of the earth somehow.

There’s a feeling of ancient energy and a sense of sacred.

I’m sure it’s no co-incidence that I was reading the latest and almost final draft of my Kimberly memoir before I got on the plane to come here.

As I walked alone this morning with only the sky and some birds for company, I was suddenly struck by something my Aboriginal Auntie told me, many years ago. She’d said, “You got the stories in you. Plenny stories. Old stories. Dat’s your magic. Story Magic!”.

I’d never really understood what she meant, and I had never been able to get her to explain.

Months later Auntie welcomed me to her Country with a smoke ceremony and performed some rituals with me to sing my Story into me. Then she whispered in my ear, “Now you got your Story, your Spirit no longer lost. Dat Dreaming inside you make you understand who you are. Dat Story how you gonna walk dis world.”

It made me think about the vision I’d had of walking behind a horse in Arizona (see yesterday’s blog for details) and of other dreams, visions and insights I have had – about lives before mine, back in the past, before our modern-day world.

Old stories. Other people’s stories. Or my own stories, from another time.

I’m not sure what it all means yet, but I believe that one of the reasons I have come to Sedona is to find out.

What a curious and surprising year 2020 is turning out to be.

Love from beneath vast blue skies filled with clean sunshiney air, Nicole xx

Hi! I'm Nicole Cody. I am a writer, psychic, metaphysical teacher and organic farmer. I love to read, cook, walk on the beach, dance in the rain and grow things. Sometimes, to entertain my cows, I dance in my gumboots. Gumboot dancing is very under-rated.

  1. This is so lovely, Nicole.
I did a solo trek to Sedona a few years ago and the place and my experience there still lives and breathes in me. So much connection with the earth. So many voices to listen to. So much magic.
I am loving imagining you there. It feels good to think of our energies connecting in a shared place. We are so often on different sides of the planet. xo

  2. Yep you cant take the Kimberley out of you.
Magical contrast of blue oceans and red sands and the stars in the night sky. And the boabs and gorges and waterfalls. After 25 years of being in the Kimberley it is hard to come back to the east coast to live.
Each part of the country has its magic if you want to search for it and embrace it despite the fires and drought.
Enjoy Arizona and your spiritual journey. Not sure they have the black cockatoos but if they do aunties will send them to you.Love and stay safe.

  3. I remember the first time you wrote of your Aunties and the Kimberlys. I remember asking for more. Now another tidbit and my excitement builds. Patience, I hear you say, writing takes time. Or was that me? 🤷‍♀️🙋‍♀️xxx🌻

    1. Sue, I’m sooooo close to finished that one! And yes, it did take patience and a LOT of time. Hopefully you’ll decide it was worth it xx
