Trust Your Gut Instinct! – Monday Oracle September 18 2017

Hello, Lovelies!

If you read my forecast for September, you’ll know that it’s a month of possibility and expansive energy, of change and curiosity, and of starting small projects that may take a long time, but that we care about deeply. Keep that in mind as we look at the gifts which the oracle card Instinct brings us.

So, what awareness does Instinct bring us this week?

Inside us is our essence. It’s who we are. It’s what gives us our personality and true nature. It’s our skills and talents and preferences. No matter how lost we may have become to ourselves or to our art this week our instincts kick in strongly, helping us to reconnect to or rediscover this deep truth within us.

Instinct is an inner compass that can tune us back in to our best direction. All we need to do is get quiet, and then tune in to our feelings of curiosity and relief. If we keep moving towards what engages us, and away from does not, we’ll soon find our way again.

Gut instinct or feeling is a primal response hard-wired into every human.  It’s not a mind-based wisdom. It doesn’t come from your heart. Gut feeling really does come from that area of your body – your abdomen.

So how do we tune in to our instinct this week?  It’s easier than you think. Gut instinct does not use words or images.  Gut instinct uses emotions, and rockets along our central nervous system which can also produce physical reactions.  It operates in 3 modes – neutral, forward and reverse. I’m sure you’ve all felt it and are familiar with it, whether you honour it or not.

In ‘forward’, we literally feel that we want to move closer to something.  We feel good about it.  We feel excited, happy and positive.  We can’t explain why, we can’t find the words for it, but we KNOW that something will work, that the person is good or honest, that this situation will be for the best, that this job/car/person/product/idea/food is the right choice.

In ‘neutral’ we feel indifference. There is no strong emotion or physical reaction either way.

In ‘reverse’ our gut is telling us to back away.  We feel unsure or uncomfortable.  The warning bells go off.  If it’s a mild response, this is where our brain often kicks in and invalidates our emotion (that can happen in ‘forward’ situations too!) by persuading our logical mind with rational thoughts and justifications.  In a strong response we may feel anxious or ill, we want to move back from this job/person/situation, we want to get to safety or a neutral space.  We can’t say why but we KNOW this won’t work well, this person can’t be trusted, something is wrong, it’s going to end badly…

This basic instinct is like a muscle – the more we use it, the stronger it becomes.  If we learn to trust it with the smaller things, eventually we’ll be able to hear and honour it with the bigger things. 

This week Instinct helps us find clarity about many important areas in our lives, restores lots parts of ourselves, and gets us moving in the right direction again.

How to Do a Birthday Tarot Or Oracle Spread

Every year, on the day of my birthday or sometime soon after, I do a Birthday Spread – an oracle or tarot card reading for myself for the year ahead. A ‘spread’ is simply a layout of cards, and I have done a Birthday Spread for myself every year for the past 25 years. I will also sometimes do them on a friend or family member’s birthday, as a little gift for them.

The picture above is of the cards I chose for this – my fiftieth year – as I sat in a favourite coffee shop, drinking chai latte and writing in my journal. The cards I am using are the Green Witch Tarot, which are my chosen personal deck of cards for 2017.

I use the Birthday Reading to gift myself direction, clarity, inspiration and guidance for the year ahead. It’s a very easy thing to do, and a meaningful way to spend time with yourself, reflecting in your life and on your coming year.

Make sure to use a deck with pictures that really speak to you.

Here’s how you can do your own Birthday Reading:

Take your chosen oracle or tarot cards, offer up a small prayer that whatever you do be for your Highest Good, and then shuffle the deck. As you’re shuffling, ask the question ‘What wisdom can guide and grow me well this coming year?’ Say it out loud or hold it as a thought in your head. Either will work.

Choose three cards. How you choose is up to you. Split the deck. Fan them out. Top or bottom. Dive right in. There is no right or wrong.

Place your cards face down in front of you, from left to right. One. Two. Three.

The first card is your Guiding Card. The Guiding Card is about you – your essence and character over the year ahead. The person you already are as well as the person you will grow to become. This is a card to inspire you, and to give you direction and hope.

The second card represents your Strengths. These are the aspects of life that will positively support you over the next twelve months. Knowing this can help you to make better choices, and show you where to seek support and strengthen skills and relationships.

The third card represents your Opportunities. These are the fields of endeavour, relationships and interests that will work well for you in the coming year. Hooray for that!

Interpreting your cards using intuition:

Remember that the Universe and your own Wise Inner Self always speak to you with love and positive messages!

Turn the first card over.

Now look at your card. If you want you can hold a favourite crystal in your hand as you do this. Really look at the card. Don’t use the book or the ‘proper’ meaning. We are being intuitive here, people! What stands out for you in the picture? How does that apply to giving you guidance for the year ahead? What does this card say about you that is positive and supportive? What thoughts and ideas do the images provoke? Take a minute or two and write those thoughts down. I know, you might feel like you’re just making it all up. That’s okay. Write anyway. Trust that there is a part of you that is wise and that has been waiting for this chance to speak with your conscious mind.

Repeat this process with the second card. And then with the third.

I will often do a very quick summary first, writing down any first thoughts for each of the three cards. Later I will go back and write about each card in more depth, and also add my thoughts and plans for the year ahead, based on the cards I have chosen.

If you need to, refer back to the book that came with your cards. Choose anything that really speaks to you from the meaning of each card, and be happy to discard the rest.

I also like to take a photo of the cards with my phone, so I can refer back to it, and so that I can print it out and add it to my journal as a visual reminder of the cards I chose.

During the year I will come back to these pages, reflecting on the guidance I was given, and then actively applying that information in my life.

The Energies of September – 2017

Suddenly, here we are at September. I love September. In Australia it’s the beginning of Spring, and It’s a month of possibility and expansive energy, of change and curiosity, and of starting small projects that may take a long time, but that we care about deeply.

Cards for the Month:

I’ve chosen two cards for September for you: one from the Osho Zen Tarot Deck, and one from Colette Baron-Reid’s Wisdom of the Oracle. Please note I don’t use these cards in the conventional way, but rather as a stimulus for channelled information.

September is the kind of month well suited to creating long-range plans, and to taking actions that might not bear fruit for many years. We come to the realisation that the journey itself holds as much or more meaning than the destination, and we begin to see how important it is to enjoy our lives and to create meaning in the simple and the everyday. We see how the journey shapes us, and that some of our finest moments have come from our toughest times.

September holds the energy of starting a hand-pieced quilt of a thousand tiny patches that will be done when it is done. It is the energy of planting small trees in our garden that will take their time becoming large ones.

September is also a fantastic month for any kind of travel, trip or adventure. These kinds of journeys bear their own fruit, often in the form of inspiration or new perspectives. This could be journeying without, or journeying within – or both! It’s a month for experiencing new horizons and new cultures. It’s a month that heralds unexpected changes and gains.We meet new friends. We do things differently to how we’ve always done them and feel comfortable in doing so. We realise it’s perfectly fine to be our ever-evolving selves.

 

The second card I’ve chosen is Deep Knowing. This reminds us that tuning in to our own wisdom will help us to find answers, clarity and guidance this month.

In September we are able to see ourselves from many different angles. If we’ve lost ourselves, or our view has become too narrow it will be a relief to find that we are more complex and wonderful than we had remembered.

Things that were once dear to us will make their way back into our lives this month. New interests will be sparked and some will take hold in life-changing ways. We’ll come to understand ourselves better, and this knowledge will help us to make decisions and choices that are in true alignment with this richer version of ourselves.

September is truly outstanding for all forms of inner journeying and spiritual work because the strength of our connection to intuition will be heightened.

What Does It Mean When You Keep Pulling The Same Oracle Or Tarot Card?

I received an email last week, and then another and then another. They all said the same thing although they were written by different people, so I’ll quote just one of them below, which can stand for all the other ones just like it:

Dear Nicole, I think all my Oracle and Tarot decks must be broken. I keep pulling the same card almost every week. This has been happening for me since mid last year. When I go to another deck I pull a card that has almost the same images or the same message. How do I fix this or do I need to throw them away and buy some new cards? Can you suggest any? Love from S

Has this ever happened to you?

It sure has happened to me.

Here’s the card that forced me to choose a whole new deck back in the day, after it just kept coming up on almost a daily basis (it’s from the Self Care deck by Cheryl Richardson):

Funny thing is, my new Doreen Virtue deck was broken too. Because look what card kept coming up for me:

Apart from the stupidly obvious same-same graphic (Hay House, is this the ultimate recycling of images?) the message, energy and feel of the card was exactly the same as my previous deck.

Sigh.

My decks weren’t broken. I didn’t need new ones. I just needed to pay better attention.

When we find ourselves drawing the same card over and over be assured that it is repeating because we have not yet truly understood and integrated the message. Furthermore, we may have understood the message but ignored it.

The fastest way to get a different card is to pay attention to the one that keeps showing itself to you. Act on that.

Back when this card kept showing itself the Universe and my Higher Self knew that what I most needed was rest. But I sure wasn’t paying attention to that message until that second deck’s card (the very first one I ever chose) hit me like a brick to the face. That very day I closed down my corporate business and began to focus on my healing journey in earnest. So much magic and goodness came about from finally paying attention to the message I was being presented.

If the same card keeps coming up for you I also suggest pulling four more cards to do a reading for yourself about why this card keeps appearing:

  1. Choose the first card in response to the question What is this card showing me right now?
  2. Choose the second card in response to the question What obstacles are blocking my path about this situation?
  3. Choose the third card in response to the question What opportunities are presented by this situation?
  4. Choose the fourth card in response to the question What is my best way forward?

The Week Ahead – Oracle for Monday 14 August 2017

Here’s Monday’s oracle card, and my energetic forecast for the week ahead. I use any cards shown as a prompt for channelled messages and my own intuitive wisdom, so my take is sometimes quite different to the meaning found in a book. ‘Dissipating’ is from the Chakra Wisdom Oracle Deck by Tori Hartman.

If you read my forecast for August, you’ll remember that August brings an emerging energy of creativity, emotional healing and an abiding need for more balance in our lives. 

Keep that in mind as we look at the gifts Dissipating brings us this week.

So last week was one of the finest weeks for creativity I’ve seen in a long time, and the energies of that creative and spiritual connection carry over this week until Tuesday evening. (Need a refresh on last week’s forecast? Click here.)

But what happens after that?

All that creative headwind starts to dissipate. Some of you might consider the dip in energies which begins on Wednesday to be a slump. Suddenly you’ll move from being bright and full of enthusiasm for your projects to that place of questioning your very ideas, or worse. (Maybe you know that space that is so familiar to creatives – the “I suck, my ideas suck, this all sucks” space.)

Don’t give in to the blahs and start looking for a new bright shiny dream or project to chase after this week. The lower, slower energies are actually well suited to rest, reflection and topping up your creative tank. All projects and ideas need to sit for a while after they are first made. This enables us to come back to them with fresh eyes so that we can review and edit them to shape them into something even better than our first efforts.

This week shows you how to stick with an existing idea or project until the energy begins to ramp up again. It encourages you to create sustainably and to ride the cycles of creativity that ebb and flow in your life.

Supportive crystals this week?

Nephrite Jade (Greenstone) is a stone that supports heart-centred living and emotional expression in life and in art. Carnelian energises and grounds the physical body and aids all forms of healing and creativity – great for overcoming exhaustion and burnout. Turquoise encourages empathy, compassion and the ability to slow down and stay grounded. Amethyst helps us to tune in to all forms of spiritual guidance.

Helpful essential oils?

Young Living’s Abundance essential oil blend, or a combination (or singly!) of any of Orange, Geranium, Frankincense and Myrrh. Abundance opens us to the flow of life, helping us to act from a place of love, trust and benevolence. Just rub a drop together in the palms of your hands and then breathe in and wipe through your aura.  Dab a few drops on your wrists or over your heart – its warm, spicy aroma makes it a great perfume or cologne. A few drops in the bath are wonderful too. You may want to dilute with a drop or two of a base oil such a sweet almond or coconut before applying directly to the skin.  It’s my oil of choice in my diffuser this week.

Suddenly, here we are at August. There’s change in the air. There’s a fresh breeze blowing. Creativity and curiosity are guiding forces for us this month. It’s a month for connecting with our emotions and for all forms of healing.

There is much to enjoy in August!

August is a masterfully creative month that suits all kinds of projects and artistic or innovative ventures. It’s a month of inspired action and of magical connections. You don’t need to see the whole way ahead – sometimes it’s enough just to begin, even though you can only see the first or the next step. You’ll be able to create a solid foundation that you can build on over future months.

If you’ve ever yearned to have a creative hobby, or to make money from a creative interest this is a great month to start or launch!

You’re reminded to do whatever you can to ease stress and bring your life back into balance this month. It’s the perfect month for feeling your feelings and working on emotional healing. If you’ve ever thought about finding a counsellor or therapist, or working on relationship issues around a partner or family member this is a very supportive energy for inviting understanding and forgiveness, for creating perspective and for being able to move on.

August is also a great month for reconnecting with our inner child, or with the children in our lives. Make space for art, make space for music, make space for inspiration. Watch your self-talk and be sure to speak of what you want and want to become, rather than what you don’t want or don’t like. Words have power, and speaking these things draws them to you,so choose wisely!

 

The second card I’ve chosen is Higher Power. It speaks to the flow and emotional satisfaction that come from tuning in to our heart and intuition, and allowing ourselves to be guided in our lives and with our art.

In August we can call in our Angels, our Guides and all other Muses to help us with our art. That art might be the work we want to do in the world, or the energies within us that need to be expressed as a project or a business. At a fundamental level it can be as simple as our art being the way we live, so that our life becomes the canvas.

Everything will work better with an injection of love this month. When we bring care and passion to our daily lives, when we devote time and thoughtfulness to all we do, our output can be elevated from pedestrian to something so much more.

August helps us find ways to connect with others in ways that truly reach them emotionally. That’s a powerful thing for any artist. It’s a powerful thing for anyone.

Higher Power assures us of a month of inspiration, flow, breakthroughs, progress and good news.

Small Steps and A Pep Talk For Hard Days

As most of you know, I am recovering from illness right now.

I’ve just finished two months of bed rest and am slowly easing myself back into life again. Luckily I’ve found my sweet spot. About three hours of work a day right now is all I can manage. Three hours gives me enough left in the tank for a walk on the beach, for cooking healthy meals, for meaningful connection with my loved ones and for self-care.

Any more than three hours and exhaustion creeps in. If I overdo it and go crazy at my desk I am useless for the next two or three days. Pacing myself is essential. And it is for you too, my friends.

The first six months of this year have been intense. They have required so much from us as we unstick ourselves from the mud, face what needs to be faced, heal what needs to be healed, and attend to all the things that have been holding us back. Because that’s what growth is all about. Sometimes we have to clean up the mess first before we can really start on new things on earnest. The only way you can do that is to put one foot in front of the other.

On January 1 this year I chose a tarot card as guidance for the year ahead. The card was Prince of Disks. The wisdom of this card is all about how taking small steps matters, even though small steps may seem decidedly unsexy and unimpressive when viewed in isolation. But of course, over time small steps add up to big shifts forward. (You can read more about my forecast for 2017 here. )

The energies of the second half of this year are much less intense, much more expansive and creative and allowing. But the small steps rule still applies.

You may feel like you’ve done nothing this year. Perhaps in relation to your bigger goals, dreams and projects that’s true. I can guarantee you though that you’ve been working anyway. Clearing the mess. Dealing with life’s dramas. Sorting out the priorities life has put in front of you. So don’t despair and don’t give up. Use July as your fresh start. Start over. Begin your plans again. Pick up whatever you had to put down when it all got too much. Keep making small steps. Small steps are all you will ever need. (more on July energies here)

As to pacing yourself?

If your life is so crazy that you have no time for yourself, if you are exhausted all the time, if you are resentful of any more demands being made of you – even by loved ones, then it’s time to pace yourself. Work out your sweet spot and stick to what you can manage. It’s always a diminishing return anyway once you move past happily productive and into exhaustion.

If there’s no way to slow down then seriously consider getting off that particular merry-go-round. Life is too short, and you are too precious to work yourself into an early grave for no good reason.

Above all, lovelies, be gentle with yourselves. You’re recovering from a great intensity too. Kindness and self care are magical medicines for care-worn souls.
